General BA in Anthropology

Program Requirements

Consult the University Bulletin for a complete description of program requirements.

  • Prerequisite courses:
    • Biological Anthropology (Anth 1)
    • Sociocultural Anthropology (Anth 2)
    • Archaeology (Anth 3)
    • Language in Culture and Society (Anth 4) (13 hours)
  • Two-year proficiency in French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or another approved language (usually 12-16 credit hours).
  • Anthropology courses at the 100 level, including Anth 198, Foundations of Anthropology and at least one course from each of the following five categories (24 to 36 hours):
    • aspects of cultures (courses in the 150s, 105, 117, 121, 130, 191, 192, 193)
    • linguistics (courses in the 160s)
    • ethnology (courses in the 170s)
    • biological anthropology (courses in the 140s and 5)
    • archaeology (courses in the 180s and 113-119).
  • Qualified seniors may enroll in 200-level seminar courses with the permission of the instructor.
  • Field Schools, Internships, and Research. Up to six hours of approved archaeological or ethnographic field school credit, internships, or independent research may be applied toward the major through registration in Anth 195, and majors are encouraged to take such courses. Consult the department for further information.
  • Courses in related departments (6 to 12 hours) approved by the advisor. Recommended courses for emphasis in:
    • sociocultural — economics, history, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology
    • archaeological — American studies, art history, geography, geology, and history
    • biological — anatomy, chemistry, physical geography, and biological sciences
    • linguistic — linguistics and in speech and hearing.
    • courses in statistics are strongly recommended for all anthropology majors.
Special Honors in Anthropology. Students who meet the CCAS requirements for special honors are encouraged to undertake a thesis research project in their senior year. Such students should take 3 or more hours of Anth 195 (Undergraduate Research). See the Department flyer or click here.

Minor in general anthropology

Twenty-one credit hours are required, including Anth 1, 2, 3, and 4, and three additional courses in anthropology, which must be taken in different subdisciplines. For the purposes of this minor, courses are divided into subdisciplines as follows: Biological Anthropology — courses in the 140s and 5; archaeology — the 180s and 113-116; anthropological linguistics — the 160s; sociocultural anthropology — all other 100-level courses, with the exception of Anth 195.

Minor in sociocultural anthropology

Eighteen credit hours are required, including Anthropology 2, one course in ethnography (Anth 170-179); and four courses in aspects of culture or methods and theory (Anth 117, 121, 130, 150-159, 191-193, 198).

Minor in cross-cultural communication

Twenty-one credit hours are required, including Anthropology 2 and 4, 161, 162; Anth 150 or 159; one course in ethnography (Anth 170-179); and one course chosen from Anth 153, 154, 155, 158, 163, 168, 169, 192, or 193.
