PhD
Funding
The American Studies Department offers fellowships, teaching and research
assistantships for PhD students, who are typically funded for four or
five years. Previous doctoral students have been successful in winning
fellowhips for dissertation work. Additionally,
the University's Office
of Fellowships and Graduate Student Support also assists students
in locating funding opportunities.
NEW!
GTA/PhD in American Studies/American Art History
This new graduate assistantship for PhD studies
matriculates in American Studies under the supervision of David Bjelajac,
Professor of Art History and American Studies. The assistantship includes
five-year support for the PhD degree, working as a research and teaching
assistant in the American Studies and Art History departments, as well
as an opportunity to teach independent courses in both departments.
The GTA package includes an annual stipend, plus tuition and partial
reimbursement for student health insurance. As with all of our graduate
programs, applications for this assistantship (including a 1000-word
statement of purpose, official university transcripts, GREscores, and
three letters of recommendation) are due on January 15, 2008.
MA
Funding
A few tuition-remission
awards are made to MA students, but most MA students finance the degree
with loans; University employment, which carries tuition benefits; and
part-time work, often in jobs pertinent to their professional goals.
Additionally,
the University's Office
of Fellowships and Graduate Student Support also assists students
in locating funding opportunities.
