Graduate Programs

  • Applications

The American Studies Department expects all applicants to graduate programs to submit their applications online at http://www.gwu.edu/~gradinfo/. The online system maintains your confidentiality through the assignment of a personal identification number and allows you to complete the application at your convenience. Your general information, statement of purpose, and even your letters of recommendation may be submitted online. At your direction, the online system will send electronic requests to your recommenders, providing them with instructions on how to submit their letters electronically. (For recommenders who prefer to submit their letters by mail to the Columbian College, a copy of the Recommendation Form may be downloaded at http://www.gwu.edu/~gradinfo/rec.pdf.) Please keep in mind that you will still have to request that academic transcripts and GRE scores be sent directly by mail to the Columbian College prior to application deadlines. Applications will not be considered complete until all materials have been received.

If you are unable to use the online application process, you should contact the Office of Graduate Admissions in the Columbian College (contact information below) to request a downloadable version of all the necessary forms. All admissions materials submitted by mail should be sent to:

For more information on applying, consult our tutorials on applying to the doctoral program and the master's program. Please note that we do not send out any information packets about our graduate programs by mail.

The American Studies Department does not have a separate GRE code. You should use the George Washington University Columbian College of Arts & Sciences GRE code, which is 5246.

  • Deadlines

For the PhD program, all applications must be received in the Office of Graduate Admissions by January 15; decisions are usually made by mid-February. Late applications will not be accepted.

For the MA program, applications must be received in the Office of Graduate Admissions by March 1, and decisions are usually made by mid-April. Later applications will be considered as space allows.

All new students are expected to enter their graduate programs in the fall, with the exception of historic preservation students, who may also enter in the spring; the deadline for spring admissions is October 1.

PLEASE NOTE: These application deadlines do not necessarily correspond with the general deadlines for the university or Columbian School of Arts and Sciences. Do not follow the university deadlines.

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to submit applications well before deadlines and confirm receipt with the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. The department cannot be responsible for any applications or supporting materials incorrectly addressed or otherwise lost in transit.

  • MA versus PhD Application

Taking the MA degree in the department is not a prelude to entering the PhD program. If you desire to be in the PhD program, you must apply to it directly.
