The
American Studies Department expects all applicants to graduate programs
to submit their applications online at http://www.gwu.edu/~gradinfo/.
The online system maintains your confidentiality through the assignment
of a personal identification number and allows you to complete the application
at your convenience. Your general information, statement of purpose,
and even your letters of recommendation may be submitted online. At
your direction, the online system will send electronic requests to your
recommenders, providing them with instructions on how to submit their
letters electronically. (For recommenders who prefer to submit their
letters by mail to the Columbian College, a copy of the Recommendation
Form may be downloaded at http://www.gwu.edu/~gradinfo/rec.pdf.)
Please keep in mind that you will still have to request that academic
transcripts and GRE scores be sent directly by mail to the Columbian
College prior to application deadlines. Applications will not be considered
complete until all materials have been received.
If
you are unable to use the online application process, you should contact
the Office of Graduate Admissions in the Columbian College (contact
information below) to request a downloadable version of all the necessary
forms. All admissions materials submitted by mail should be sent to:

For
the PhD program, all students are expected to enter their graduate program
in the Fall. Applications must be received in the Office of Graduate
Admissions by January 15; decisions are usually made by the early March.
Late applications will not be accepted.
For
the MA program, students may enter their graduate program in the Fall
or Spring. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis between
March 1 and June 1. Students should apply by March 1 for the first round
of admissions, but applications are accepted until June 1. The
deadline for Spring admissions is October 1, and decisions are usually
made by early November. Later applications will be considered as space
allows.
PLEASE NOTE: These application deadlines do not necessarily correspond
with the general deadlines for the university or Columbian School of
Arts and Sciences. Do not follow the university deadlines.
Prospective students are strongly encouraged to submit applications
well before deadlines and confirm receipt with the Columbian College
of Arts and Sciences. Any questions about the application process should
be directed to the CCAS Admissions Office at http://gwired.gwu.edu/adm/contact/office/
The department cannot be responsible for any applications or supporting
materials incorrectly addressed or otherwise lost in transit.
For
MA applicants, some fellowships are offered by GW and by outside organizations,
including the Career
Development Fellowship. These are intended to assist students who
are working/interning either full- or part-time and are pursuing or
wish to pursue Master's level study at GW to enhance their knowledge
and skills. It is assumed that these students will add the dimension
of real world experience to the classroom and will, in turn, employ
new knowledge and skills from their courses at GW in the workplace.
Visit the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships
for information about this and other fellowships at http://www.gwu.edu/~fellows/
Master's
students may also work full or part-time via
employment within The George Washington University community through
the assistance of GW's Career
Center. George Washington University also has numerous positions
available that provide tuition reimbursement. Visit our Human
Resources website for campus job opportunities. Other non-tuition
reimbursement jobs are also available on campus and throughout the Washington,
D.C., area.
For foreign applicants, visit the GW Admissions page for International
Funding Opportunities. Before admission can be completed, the Financial
Certificate citing funding resources must be submitted. Funds must be
certified in US currency only. You will need copies of your financial
documentation to prove to US consular officials that you have sufficient
funds to attend GW for the duration of your studies before your submission.
We suggest, therefore, that you make copies of this and all supporting
documents.
