GW Battleground
GW-BATTLEGROUND 2008 POLL FINDS MCCAIN AND OBAMA NECK AND NECK
The latest edition of The George Washington University Battleground 2008 Poll, released on Aug. 20, finds that despite a negative political environment for the Republicans, the presidential horserace is within the margin of error (+ 3.1%). With a tight turnout model, McCain currently tops Obama by 1 point (47%-46%).  However, when voters are asked which candidate they think is going to win the election, 51% say Obama, while 34% think McCain will prevail.

Other significant results findings from the GW-Battleground poll include:

  • Both John McCain and Barack Obama enjoy majority favorable images (57% for each);
  • A negative political environment exists (78% wrong track) with voters most concerned about the economy and jobs (24%), gas and energy prices (15%), and the war in Iraq (12%);
  • Voters disapprove of George W. Bush's job performance (63%), but continue to approve of him as a person (57%); and
  • Nearly three quarters of voters disapprove of the job Congress has been doing this year (74%). More than half (56%) say that they think Democrats are in control of Congress, while 27% believe it is the Republicans.

This bipartisan GW-Battleground 2008 Poll surveyed 1,003 registered likely voters nationwide August 10-14, 2008, and yields a margin of error of + 3.1%.  First conducted in 1991, this poll has accurately portrayed the political climate through four presidential and three mid-term election cycles.  This series of scientific surveys is unique to the industry in that it offers the distinct perspectives of two top pollsters from different sides of the aisle.

The George Washington University is the sponsor of the GW-Battleground Poll. GW’s role in the poll is guided by the university’s Graduate School of Political Management. For more information, including poll charts and data visit the Battleground Poll website.

MEN'S WATER POLO ACHIEVES PRESEASON TOP 20 RANK
The GW men’s water polo team is ranked No. 18 in the preseason Varsity Top 20 poll released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) on Aug. 20. The Colonials also were picked fifth in the preseason CWPA poll.

GW is one of five CWPA programs ranked in the nation's Top 20, trailing No. 10 Navy and No. 12 St. Francis-NY and ahead of No. 19 Brown and No. 20 Princeton.

The Colonials return four starters, including senior David Zenk, an honorable mention All-American in 2007, and 12 letterwinners from last year’s team which finished third at the CWPA Eastern Championship and ranked No. 17 in the final Varsity Top 20 poll. GW finished last season 12-18 overall, with three victories against Top 20 foes and 11 losses by two goals or less to Top 20 teams.

GW opens the 2008 season at the Navy Open in Annapolis, Md., Sept. 6 and 7. For more water polo and athletics news, visit the GW Sports website.

GWSB RECEIVES $900,000 FROM ESTATE OF GW ALUMNUS
AND COLONIAL PARKING CO-FOUNDER

GW alumnus and Colonial Parking co-founder Sergius Gambal, GWSB BA ’52, has left nearly $900,000 to the GW School of Business through a bequest from his estate. The gift caps more than four decades of generosity to the university. Gambal died in Oct. 2007.

“Sergius Gambal’s pride in his alma mater was apparent in so many ways, including using the moniker of GW’s athletic teams as the name of his parking company,” said Susan Phillips, dean of GW’s School of Business. “This gift will sustain his legacy to the university and to the community. We are grateful for Mr. Gambal’s generosity.”

The bequest will support the business school’s Dean’s Fund and the work of the Lindner-Gambal Professorship in Business Ethics at the GW Institute for Corporate Responsibility. The professorship was created in 2005 and named for Gambal and his longtime business partner and fellow GW graduate Thaddeus Lindner, GWSB BA ’51, DPS ’94 (hon).

The Lindner-Gambal Professorship was established through the support of Gambal’s business colleague A. James Clark, CEO of Clark Enterprises, with a matching gift from the university. Clark saw the endowed chair as a way to honor Lindner and Gambal’s commitment to honesty and integrity in business. Timothy L. Fort, one of the world's leading business ethics scholars and director of the GW Institute for Corporate Responsibility, currently occupies the professorship.

Gambal and Lindner were undergraduates when they joined forces to create Colonial Parking in 1948. What started as a business with one unpaved lot and a fee of 30 cents a day at 25th and E streets has since grown into an operation that now parks more than 50,000 vehicles a day throughout the Washington, D.C.-metropolitan area.

Square 54
CONSTRUCTION WORK BEGINS AT SQUARE 54
Located on the site of the old GW Hospital, Square 54 will be a world class, mixed-use town center located at the “front door” of the Foggy Bottom/West End neighborhoods and GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus. The project, located at 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue, will offer a mix of neighborhood serving retail (including a full service grocery store) as well as residential apartments and commercial office space. Boston Properties, the project’s developer, began construction in May and expects the project to be complete in early 2011.
