women's head coach on June 24

In early June, Head Women’s Basketball Coach Joe McKeown announced he was leaving GW to lead the women’s basketball team at Northwestern University. In his 19 years with GW McKeown became the winningest coach in university and Atlantic 10 Conference history, leading the Colonials to 441 victories and 15 NCAA Tournaments, including a regional final (Elite Eight) appearance in 1997 and three trips to the regional semifinals (Sweet 16).

It took the Athletic Department just 15 days to find a replacement for McKeown, as GW promoted assistant coach Mike Bozeman to head coach of the Colonials women’s basketball team on June 24. Bozeman, who has been an assistant coach at GW the past three seasons, becomes the eighth head coach in the 34-year history of the program.

“We felt that we had an excellent job and we wanted to get someone in before the recruiting process started in July, and that mission was accomplished,” said Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz. “One person stood out amongst our group of candidates and that was our new coach — Mike Bozeman.”

Bozeman helped the Colonials to a trio of victories while serving as interim coach during the 2006-07 season, including an upset of 10th-ranked Georgia and a title at the San Diego Surf ’N Slam Classic. From 1999-2005, Bozeman served as the head girls’ basketball coach at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Md., and put the school on the national map, leading the team to a 151-35 (.812) record in six seasons.
