GW AND DUPONT HOST 24TH ANNUAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
More than 2,000 middle and high school students and their teachers gathered on GW’s Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses May 30-31 for the 24th annual Science Olympiad National Tournament. During the two-day tournament, 120 teams of students from 46 states competed in nearly 60 events focused in the subjects of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, and technology.
The Science Olympiad National Tournament events, which students prepare for during the year, are aligned with the National Science Standards and require knowledge of science concepts, process skills, and science applications. Students earned the opportunity to compete in the National Tournament by winning top honors at their state competitions.

BATTLEGROUND POLL HIGHLIGHTS VOTER CONCERNS LEADING UP TO ELECTION
The latest edition of The George Washington University Battleground 2008 Poll found that voters are most concerned about the economy and jobs, gas and energy prices, and the war in Iraq. A majority of voters – 77% – also believe that the country is on the wrong track.
The GW-sponsored bipartisan poll also found that the Democratic Party is ahead in both the presidential and congressional generic ballots, leading the Republican Party by 8 points at the presidential level (49%-41%) and 9 points at the congressional level (49%-40%). Large majorities of Americans disapprove of the jobs both congressional Democrats (57%) and Republicans (68%) are doing to confront the issues.
“This poll underscores huge difficulties that lie ahead for the Republican Party,” said Christopher Arterton, dean of GW's Graduate School of Political Management. “It also shows the continued importance of 'pocketbook' issues among voters. Candidates must show a comprehensive economic agenda if they are to win in November.”
