Richard D. Albright, CCAS MS ’80, has published a book, Cleanup of Chemical and Explosive Munitions, which explains how to clean up military ranges and dump sites. It includes lists of chemical agent and explosive contaminants, previously unknown ranges and ocean dumpsites. The book is written for new environmentalists and property owners confronting munitions issues for the first time as well as experienced military munitions experts that lack the environmental background.

Mitchell E. Blaser, GWSB BBA ’73, has been promoted to senior vice president and chief operating officer of Ironshore Inc. Blaser has been with Ironshore since the company’s first day. CEO Robert Deutsch said he has been someone who is “a terrific partner and constantly thinking about Ironshore. His involvement includes all facets of our business. I can’t imagine, nor do I want to, what Ironshore would be like without his tenacity and dedication.” Blaser serves as the Board Chair for the GWSB Dean's Board of Advisors.

Liliane Blom, CCAS BA ’91, is showing her installation art piece called Norwegian Nights at Artomatic 2008 in the up and coming NoMa neighborhood of Washington D.C., for five weeks starting May 9. It is the first of a projected series of installation pieces entitled “Outside Inn” by the local artist.

Tengku Mohd Syazwan Tengku Hassan, CCAS BS ’06, and Nor Adilah Mat Nain are happy to announce their marriage on March 20 in Pengkalan Chepa, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. They currently reside in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Pam Jenoff, ESIA BA ‘92, has released a new novel, The Diplomat's Wife. Her first novel, The Kommadant's Girl, was an international bestseller and Quill award nominee.  For more information, visit www.pamjenoff.com

Courtney Carrier Pace, CCAS BA ’00, received her Master's in Social Work from Bridgewater State College with honors on May 18. 

Richard S. Relac, CCAS BA '69, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Valley Forge Composite Technologies, Inc. VLYF and its four subsidiaries are developers, manufacturers and worldwide distributors of next-generation detection and aerospace systems. Relac provided Russian technical translation and language-consulting services to VLYF for its development of THOR LVX, an advanced cargo-scanning system capable of penetrating all shielding to detect and identify explosives, nuclear materials, narcotics and chemical or biological agents in passenger baggage or cargo containers.

Melissa (Raiken) Siskind, CCAS BA ‘04, LAW JD ’07, and Ariel Siskind, CCAS BA ’04, are happy to announce their marriage on April 6, 2008. They currently reside in Washington, D.C.  

Christopher Teal, CCAS MA ’97, is a foreign service officer at the State Department and will soon be leaving for his next assignment in Guadalajara, Mexico. He is also having his new book published, Hero of Hispaniola, a biography of America's first black diplomat, Ebenezer D. Basset.

Derek Walter, GSEHD MA ‘06, was recently appointed as an adjunct faculty member at National University. He is teaching courses for student teachers and interns in the university's School of Education. He also serves as a county chair for John McCain's presidential campaign and writes on policy, education, and current events at his web site and blog: derekwalter.com.

Titi Williams-Davies, GWSB BBA ’07, won the title of Miss DC International 2008 last month. Williams-Davies, who is a Presidential Administrative Fellow getting her MBA at GW, will begin a year of service promoting a platform of 'Youth Volunteerism.' Last year, another GW graduate, Rita Sinha, SEAS BS ’06, won the competition.

IN MEMORIAM

Nicholas Lakas, CCAS AA '43, GWSB BA '46, passed away May 23, 2008. As a student, Lakas was a member of the men's cheerleading team and choral groups. He served in World War II and went on to a successful career with the State Department. Lakas received the GW Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1996 and served as president of the GW Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2002-2003. The Colonial Cable printed an article about Nick's involvement with his alma mater in March 2006.
