The American Hospital Association will present its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to Fred Brown, CCAS MA ’82, chairman of Fred L. Brown & Associates, LLC an international consulting company in Scottsdale, Ariz. This award recognizes significant lifetime contributions and service to the nation's health care institutions and associations.
Howard Ennes, Jr., CCAS BA ’41, published Nature’s Way – Observations of a Good Earthkeeper, a selection of 150 columns about the flora and fauna around us written by his wife, Marion Dusoir Ennes, between 1988 and 1998.
The Wisconsin Law Journal has selected Nathan A. Fishbach, CCAS BA ’74, as a 2008 recipient of the Leaders in the Law Award. Fishbach, a shareholder and a member of the board of directors at Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek, is one of 20 legal professionals in Wisconsin that will receive the award. The Leaders in the Law Award recognizes the state’s top legal practitioners based on a wide variety of achievement criteria including outstanding leadership, vision, and legal expertise.
John E. Horton, CCAS MA '78, has been recognized as the Fifth Distinguished Alumni of the Advanced Training Program in Periodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry. Horton was cited for his “remarkable career as an educator, clinician, and researcher,” wherein he established a role for cell-mediated reactions in the pathophysiology of periodontal disease.

Gayle I. Horwitz, CCAS BA ’02, an associate in the Cleveland office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP was selected as a member of Crain’s Cleveland Business “Twenty in Their 20s Class of 2008.” In addition, Horwitz recently won the Ohio State Bar Foundation, District Community Service Award for attorneys 40 and under.
Heather Hurwitz, CCAS BA ’01, will be attending the University of California Santa Barbara as a PhD candidate in Sociology starting this fall. The program is very strong in global studies, gender, and culture, which is what she plans to study.
Eric Lebson, CCAS BA ’92, and Diane (Grzyb) Lebson, ESIA BA ’92, were married in April 2008 in Sudbury, Mass. They currently reside in Washington, D.C. Eric and Diane met in 1989 through their shared activities in College Republicans and Greek Life (Eric was Phi Kappa Psi and Diane was Phi Sigma Sigma and an officer in Panhellenic Association). Diane is pursuing her doctoral work and a career in philanthropic fundraising while Eric has a career in foreign affairs.
Meredith Miller, GWSB BBA ’03, joined the firm Dreier LLP as Marketing Specialist, based in New York, as an addition to the firm’s national marketing efforts. Ms. Miller, who joins Dreier LLP from the marketing department of national law firm Goodwin Procter LLP, will provide marketing and business development support to Dreier’s New York, Albany, Stamford, and Pittsburgh offices, as well as to its affiliates around the country.

David Robert Reiss, GWSB MBA ’01, completed his training at the D.C. Metropolitan Police Academy last May and had been placed as a police officer in the MPD's Reserve Corps to patrol in Washington's 6th District. While at the academy, recruits in the Reserve Corps undergo the same training as full time career recruits. Reiss maintained his position as a senior budget analyst for the Department of Homeland Security while completing the nine months of training on weeknights and weekends.
Allen S. Rugg, CCAS BA ’71, LAW JD ’74, has joined the Boston intellectual property firm Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C. as a shareholder, bringing the firm’s litigation group to 21 attorneys. Rugg has more than 30 years experience in complex litigation.

Tom Sawner, GSEHD EdD ’00, the CEO of Educational Options, Inc., was one of nine small and mid-sized business owners who participated in a roundtable discussion with President Bush about the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008.
The fourth grade students in Sandy Schiffman's, GSEHD M.Ed '97, class are already considering a GW education. The students, who all posed for a picture wearing GW Alumni Association t-shirts, are part of a program called "No Excuses University" that encourages all students to approach college as an achievable goal.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale named Mark F. Schultz, ESIA BA ’89, LAW JD ’93, an outstanding scholar. Schultz, an assistant law professor, is one of 10 faculty members to receive this recognition. He specializes in intellectual property, trademarks and unfair competition, copyrights and legal ethics and is currently working on articles about copyright reform and intellectual property.
Noah Sorkin, LAW JD '82, has been named senior vice president and general counsel of AIG Advisor Group, the largest independent broker-dealer network in the United States. He will be responsible for managing all legal and regulatory functions impacting the independent broker-dealers of AIG Advisor Group.

John B. Umhau, CCAS BA ’49, SMHS MD ’52, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. He was chief of the Medical Staff of Suburban Hospital (1976-1979), on the medical staff at Holy Cross, Montgomery General, and Washington Adventist Hospitals, and maintained a vibrant Family Practice into his late 70s. Umhau twice received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from the GW Medical School. A published photographer, stamp collector, amateur magician, beekeeper, and avid traveler, he particularly enjoyed Viennese waltzes and anything he did with his wife Jan.
