The GW Women’s Basketball team topped Auburn and Cal on their way to a second straight appearance in the Sweet 16.
The No. 6-seed Colonials fell to No. 2-seed Rutgers 53-42 in the Greensboro regional semifinals on Sunday, March 30. Rutgers also upended GW 67-42 in the team’s first meeting this season on November 18, 2007, at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
The GW women (27-7) made their fourth trip to the Sweet 16 all-time with appearances in 1995, 1997, and 2007. The Colonials reached the Elite Eight in 1997.
GW played the first two rounds of the tournament in Stanford, Calif., at Maples Pavilion. In the first round the Colonials downed 11th-seeded Auburn, 66-56. Junior Jessica Adair led four double-digit scorers with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. Two days later, GW topped No. 3-seed Cal 55-53. Senior Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored four points in the last 12 seconds, including the game-winning putback as time expired. GW fell to Rutgers in the third round of the tournament Sunday.
