Politics and Port is a unique opportunity to exchange views with other alumni about current politics in an intimate setting. Rosen served as the chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America from 1998 to 2003, and launched initiatives to limit the swapping of copyrighted music over the Internet.

THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE BAND - AIRMEN OF NOTE WITH SPECIAL GUEST JUNIOR MANCE
The Airmen of Note is one of eight performing units of the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C., and is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Originally created in 1950 to carry on the tradition of Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps dance band, the Airmen of Note is one of today's few touring big bands, and has attracted the finest musicians in the country.

THE FRANK HOWARD DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES

The Frank Howard Distinguished Lecture Series is an endowed lecture fund established in 1945 by a gift from its namesake, an alumnus and trustee of the University, and president of the Standard Oil Development Company. The Lecture Series brings outstanding leaders of science and industry to GW to discuss timely topics in engineering and allied subjects. Past lecturers include acclaimed scientists Dr. Werner Von Braun, Dr. Edward Teller, and Dr. W. Edwards Deming; Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Dr. Shirley Jackson, and structural engineer of the World Trade Center, Leslie E. Robertson, P.E.

KYLAN JONES-HUFFMAN MEMORIAL LECTURE
The Department of History at GW presents the Kylan Jones-Huffman Memorial Lecture. This event honors Kylan Jones-Huffman, who was admitted to GW’s Ph.D. program in Middle Eastern history, before being killed in 2003 while on temporary assignment with the First Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq.

Fulfilling Kylan’s wishes, his family and friends contributed gifts to endow the Kylan and Heidi Jones-Huffman Fund in support of graduate students in Middle Eastern history. Please join us for a lecture featuring Professor Timothy Mitchell of New York University, who will present Carbon Democracy: The Origins and Limits of Petropolitics.

CASINO ROYALE WITH JOSEPH KIEHL, CIA OPERATIVE - SAVE THE DATE
Ever wonder how realistic the James Bond movies actually are? On Saturday, November 18, join GW alumni for a luncheon and lecture by Joseph Kiehl, BA ’72, MA ’86, as he compares the James Bond fantasy to the real life of an overseas intelligence operative.  Kiehl is a 26-year veteran of the Clandestine Service within the CIA’s Directorate of Operations. Much of his career was spent overseas as a field operations officer and manager, including two stints as a station chief in Africa and Eastern Europe.

GW ALUMNI NIGHT AT THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE
For more than a century The Beaux’ Stratagem, by George Farquhar, was one of the most frequently performed English comedies. The Shakespeare Theatre Company rediscovers this classic with a world-premiere adaptation by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig. Michael Kahn directs this bold critique of class, marriage, and English society.

Join GW alumni for a night at the theatre. A pre-show reception will be held at 6 p.m. at Zaytinya, where GW professor Catherine Weidner will speak to the group. Ms. Weidner is the program director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company Academy for Classical Acting at The George Washington University.

Throughout October, visit the Eckles Library at GW’s Mount Vernon Campus to view the following exhibits (during normal library hours, which are Monday through Thursday from 8am to 11pm, Friday 8am to 7pm, Saturday from 11am to 7pm, and Sunday from 11am to 11pm):

Mount Vernon Students - Then and Now: This timeline of photographs and memorabilia highlights the history of student life at Mount Vernon Campus from the Mount Vernon Seminary days through the Fall 2006 semester. It provides a particularly interesting look into the life of Elizabeth Somers, founder of the Seminary, and also highlights memorabilia from a class president in the late 1940s. Attend the Opening Reception on Tuesday, October 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

To the Light: Exploring one woman's survival from breast cancer, this collection of photographs highlights her journey through treatment in 1995 and her 10th anniversary in 2005. In commemoration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this powerful exhibit will be accompanied by free educational materials from our co-sponsor, the GW Cancer Institute.
