Mu Delta History

History of Mu Delta

Mu Delta Chapter was chartered on March 11, 1978 at The George Washington University in Washington, DC by 13 women of distinction. The idea originated from an interest group called AKABA which is Swahili for fertility and grace. Of the 14 members of AKABA, 13 of them became charter members of Mu Delta.

With many hardworking, energetic, and intelligent members throughout the years, Mu Delta has proven to be an outstanding chapter. One of the most distinguished women to come through Mu Delta Chapter was J. Felicia Stallings. Ms. Stallings pledged Spring '82. During the Fall of 1983, she was the only member left. She took on every office, worked a part time job, had 21 credits and was an engineering major. With these responsibilities, she still managed to bring a line of four into the chapter. Ms. Stallings is the epitome of the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Since then, Mu Delta Chapter has continued to strive to reach the international target goals set up by our sorority. The chapter is involved with an on-going mentoring program with Lucy Diggs Slowe Elementary School. Also, Mu Delta Chapter sponsors various workshops dealing with a wide range of issues, including education, health, economics, and the black community. Acknowledged for its outstanding community service, Mu Delta Chapter has received various awards within the sorority, NPHC, and at the university level.
