Elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1987. Elected to the California State Assembly in 1982. Served in the Carter White House and the San Francisco Department of Health and Human Services in the 1970s. Grew up in the Pico Rivera area, daughter of a Mexican mother and a Mexican-American father.
