March 14, 2007--Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) addressed the IAFF 2008 Presidential Forum.
Speech notes.  Sen. Dodd decried "an administration that seems determined to undermine at every turn basic workers' rights in this country: overtime pay, the right to collective bargaining, attacking public workers whom we charge with some of the nation's most important responsibilities."  "I'm proud to say over 32 years I have stood with unions," Dodd said.  He pointed to several signature accomplishments including the Family and Medical Leave Act, the first federal child care law since World War II, and reform of election laws after 2000, and he earned a standing ovation when he pointed to "having written the FIRE Act and the SAFER Act and passing it to law."  "As a result of those two pieces of legislation more than 30,000 grants totaling more than $3 billion have been awarded to communities throughout the country to help them hire, train and equip fire fighters in the United States," Dodd said.  "It never ever would have happened had it not been for Harold Schaitberger and for the people in this room and others around the country who lobbied hard for it."
