Delegate Registration Begins for WVGOP Presidential Convention
Charleston, WV – The WVGOP Presidential Convention announced today that West Virginia Republicans may begin registering to become a delegate to the Convention, which will occur on February 5, 2008. Registration will continue until November 30, 2007.
“We are excited to announce that delegate registration has begun. There is no question that active delegate participation is critical to a successful convention. Each and every delegate will have a unique role that will help communicate West Virginia’s presidential choice to the entire Country,” said Bob Fish, CEO of the WVGOP Presidential Convention, Inc.
There are several ways to become a delegate to the State Convention. Those individuals who serve as a member of their County Republican Executive committee, State Republican Executive committee, or as a Republican member of the State Legislature or Board of Public Works are already well on their way to becoming delegates, because Convention rules have designated these positions as delegates to the convention. Further, all other West Virginia Republicans are eligible to serve in one of the hundreds of at-large delegate seats that must be filled. It is important to note that all who are interested, including those who are members of the committees listed above, must file the registration form, along with a $25 registration fee, with the State Republican Party between November 1 and 30, 2007. The form and instructions can be found at www.wvgopconvention.com. Go to the “Do You want to be a Delegate?” section.
Background on Delegate Selection to the State Convention
About 60% of the 1446 delegates come from recognized Republican groups
– County Committees, State Committee, and Republican Legislators.
The remaining delegates come from county bonus delegates who will be selected
by on-line voting and county conventions. While holding a county
convention is not required, every county has been encouraged to hold a
county convention as it maximizes the opportunity for participation in
this process. Those interested in learning if a county convention
is being held in their respective county should contact the chair of the
Republican Executive Committee member in their county.
