Campaign for America's Future's "Take Back America" Conference, June 12-14, 2006
June 13, 2006--Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) devoted the first part of his speech to Iraq.  His remarks contrasted sharply with the views expressed by Sen. Clinton earlier in the morning.  He stated, "It is essential to acknowledge that the war itself was a mistake -- to say the simple words, to say the simple words that contain more truth than pride.  We were misled.  We were given evidence that was not true.  It was wrong and I was wrong to vote for that Iraqi war resolution..."  Further Kerry stated, "I believe we need a hard and fast deadline, not an open-ended commitment of U.S. forces so that we shift responsibility and demand responsibility from the Iraqis themselves."  He vowed, "This week on the floor in the Senate I will fight for an up-or-down vote on an amendment to set a date for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq."  [transcript]
