China Green, Friendship Collegiate Academy: China studied philosophy and Mandarin at Duke University last summer as an OSSE Scholar. She was elected to serve as Mayor — her school’s equivalent to student government president — and has aspiration for another office: President of the United States of America.

Malachi Byrd, Cesar Chavez Public Charter School for Public Policy - Capitol Hill Campus: Malachi has been selected twice as a member of the DC National Youth SLAM Poetry team and last summer performed in the national SLAM competition “Brave New Voices,” which had previously been chronicled by HBO. Malachi aspires to be the first senator of DC.

Reniya Dinkins, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School: Reniya is chair of the DC Youth Advisory Council, which provides feedback to the mayor’s office on issues affecting youth in DC. She has interned with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and aspires one day to enter public office.

Avery Coffey, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School: Avery serves as a facilitator for Metro TeenAIDS to raise awareness among middle school students regarding HIV/AIDs. He’s learning calculus through independent study with a Howard University mentor and last summer made a robot during his internship the Naval Research Lab.

Meron Hagos, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School: Meron serves as a youth ambassador at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and volunteers as a Dr. Bear Ambassador at the Children’s National Medical Center. Her favorite website is CNN because she likes to stay current on world events.

Llewellyn “Xavier” Richie, KIPP DC: College Preparatory School: Llewellyn’s dream is to eliminate poverty, and he is president of the National Honor Society. As a twin, he works to maintain his independence but is passionate about supporting others who may not have anyone to depend on.

Tai’Lon Jackson, F.W. Ballou High School: Tai’Lon has been valedictorian of his class since 10th grade and also is senior class president. He studied engineering at Stanford University last summer.

Minh-Hong Nguyen, Capital City Public Charter School: Minh-Hong has been valedictorian of her class since 10th grade and will be first in her family to graduate from high school and to attend college. She was selected to serve as a summer intern in a GW Chemistry lab.
