GW International

Nearly every facet of the programs and curricula at GW is infused with the exploration of international issues. GW offers some of the most active and far-reaching international programs to be found anywhere, but that’s just the beginning. We’re creating a lifelong, worldwide community of students, alumni, parents, friends and institutions that begins in Washington and spans the globe.

Office of International Programs

The Office of International Programs strengthens resources and deepens relationships to expand global opportunities for our faculty and students and to meet the international demands of our curricula. Whether you're a representative of a potential partner institution, a student undertaking study or clinical training overseas, or a scholar extending your work to other parts of the world, we provide linkages with the departments, information and resources that shape and advance your international efforts.

Study Abroad

Each year as many as 1,400 GW students take advantage of opportunities to study abroad through our study centers and partner institutions in more than 40 countries. Each year we explore ways to improve and strengthen GW's presence abroad to address the changing needs of our students in an increasingly interdependent, culturally diverse world.

International Students

International students are important members of GW's vibrant and open community, adding to the character and depth of our student body and to the quality of academic discourse in both graduate and undergraduate classrooms.  While they are drawn to the benefits of our challenging curricula and proximity and access to hundreds of national and international organizations, we value their time with us and contributions to campus and alumni life.

The George Washington University responds to emerging issues through centers for research and scholarship that advance every field of science, policy and the arts. 

International Cooperation

GW maintains agreements and exchanges with more than 100 institutions worldwide that translate into study opportunities for hundreds of individuals yearly.  Together with our Study Abroad programs, international student activities, and Research and Visiting Scholar initiatives, these affiliations help us achieve our mission to promote international understanding and cooperation through education.

 

International Leaders

Washington offers GW students valuable opportunities to interact with national leaders who shape U.S. foreign policy. These international affairs students met on the campaign trail with then New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, now U.S. Secretary of State.

Dean's Scholars in Shakespeare

GW’s Dean’s Scholars in Shakespeare Program features a spring break trip to London. Students meet with the head of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and visit the Stratford Festival Theatre, home of The Royal Shakespeare Company.

GW Exchanges

GW maintains exchange relationships with more than 100 institutions worldwide, such as the European University of St. Petersburg. These connections enable students to enroll directly in a foreign institution and experience cultural immersion as one of its students.

Colin Powell (MBA '71)

In 2003, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, MBA ’71, gave a major policy address at the building dedication of the Elliott School of International Affairs. The event also marked the 105th anniversary of GW’s international affairs program.

A Model Partnership to Improve Maternal Health

GW’s multidisciplinary Africa Center for Health and Human Security supports African-driven programs and partnerships to improve lives across the continent. The center serves as GW’s coordinator and clearinghouse for initiatives that increase access to treatment for neglected tropical diseases, build sustainable in-country healthcare capacity and train policy analysts to manage health care reform.

Senator William J. Fulbright (LLB '34)

GW’s faculty boasts more than 55 current and former Fulbright scholars—distinguished participants in the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program created by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright (LLB ’34). Through this program, GW also welcomes visiting professors from countries around the world.
