FAQ's

How do I apply for a job at GW?

An updated listing of vacancies is continuously available on the employment page by clicking on Search Postings. You are provided with several search options in order to narrow your search criteria to include searching for Full-time/Part-time positions, by department, by position type, by campus location etc. After selecting your search criteria, the positions will populate in order of most recent posting date. The titles of the positions are bolded. To view the details of the position, please click on “View”, which appears directly below the title. You may “Return to the Search Results” or “Apply for the Position” after reading the details of the position.

If you are a first-time applicant, you will be prompted to create a username and password when you click on “Apply for this Position”. If you are a returning applicant you will be prompted to log into your account. Completed applications, resumes and cover letters (if applicable) are made viewable, directly online to the Hiring Department and Human Resources. The review of applicants’ credentials is done directly by the Hiring Department.

How often do you post new positions on your website?

An updated listing of staff and research position vacancies are continuously available on the GW Employment website via www.gwu.jobs. New vacancies are added as they become available (sometimes daily) and existing postings are removed when the positions are no longer apart of active recruitment.

How do I know if a job I see posted is still open?

All jobs that appear on the website are still open. They may be at different stages of the interview/hiring process, but they are still open. Job openings are not removed until the hiring department is no longer actively recruiting for them.

Do you accept general resumes?

We do not accept unsolicited resumes. Please apply for a specific position for which you meet the minimum qualifications for.

Is a resume and cover letter required with an application?

Yes. All applications must be accompanied by an updated resume, and cover letter, if requested. The cover letter should indicate the applicant’s salary requirement.

Must I repeat my employment history on the application even though I am attaching a resume that has all the information?

Yes. Your application is a legal document and it’s necessary for us to capture your employment data on the employment application.

After I submit an application and resume, when should I expect a response?

Normally, you will be contacted directly by the Hiring Department, if there is an interest in your background. Contact time will vary depending on the availability and schedules of the interview team, as well as the timing in which they need to fill the vacancy. Due to the volume of applications received, we’re unable to contact you, if you’re not being considered for a position. You will receive a confirmation number, after your application has been successfully completed. You may log into your account on the web page and check the status of your application. Once you log into your account, a listing of all positions that you have applied to will appear, with a status noted. If you experience technical problems, while applying for a position, please contact Human Resources at (202) 994-9600.

How many positions may I apply to?

If you believe that you are qualified, you may apply for as many different positions as you wish. You will need to submit a separate application with supporting documents for each position that you wish to apply for.

How many times can I apply for the same position?

You can only apply for the same position once, during the time period that the position remains open. However, if the position is reposted, at a later date, you may apply again. However, applying multiple times for a particular position will not speed up the application process or cause the reviewer's consideration/assessment of an applicant's qualifications to change, unless there has been an update to your skill set, subsequent to the last time you applied.

I have applied to numerous positions and have never been contacted for an interview. Should I stop applying?

Absolutely not. You’re competing against multiple applicants with similar and sometimes more experience. Therefore, it’s important that your resume highlight your relevant accomplishments. Your overall objective is to market yourself so that you stand out from the competition.

Good luck to you!
