Administering Employment Tests

Federal law requires that employment tests be job related and valid predictors of job performance. Candidates for a position requiring typing or keyboarding skills must take the University's approved typing test. Hiring departments must refer candidates who are to be tested to the Staffing and Compensation Services (SCS) Specialist assigned to the vacancy.

Currently, the Division of Human Resources (DHR) administers only a general typing test for positions requiring typing/keyboarding skills. The Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) must approve all other employment tests. For example, if a hiring department wants candidates for an Accounting Analyst vacancy to create a spreadsheet using Excel as part of the screening process, the hiring department must first contact the Director of the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) who will review the proposed test referencing the Classification Description for an Accounting Analyst. The Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) will then advise the hiring department about the appropriateness of and conditions for administering the test.
