Position Management

The University classification plan is a systematic arrangement of all authorized positions by classification title, job title, classification code, and for legal reporting purposes equal employment opportunity (eeo) occupational category. The plan provides a method of assigning a salary grade based on the University's evaluation of several commonly accepted compensation analysis factors.

Many of the University's classification descriptions are generic so they can be used throughout the University. However, a department, based on its needs, may have a position-specific description that further delineates the duties and responsibilities within the department. The University classification description and department position-specific description are not intended to limit or modify the right of a supervisor to assign, direct, and control the work of employees under his or her supervision.

A classification consists of a job title, a classification code, an equal employment opportunity (eeo) occupational category, and, as appropriate, a classification description and salary grade. A classification may apply to a group of positions with similar duties and the same level of responsibility or to a position that is unique within the University.

The key components of a classification description are:
  • The characteristic duties and responsibilities
  • Any applicable related duties
  • The supervision received
  • The supervision exercised (if applicable)
  • The entry-level qualifications
A classification description can be used as a tool to help supervisors and employees understand the job requirements, outline the expectations of the position and provide an understanding of the criteria upon which an employee's performance will be measured. Supervisors should keep copies of classification descriptions for all employees under their supervision as well as provide the employee with a copy of their classification description. Supervisors can obtain copies of staff classification descriptions from the Department of Compensation Administration.
