Employment of Minors
The University does not employ individuals who are less than
15 years of age. When minors are employed, the University complies
with applicable statutes and regulations in its various workplaces,
as follows:
Restrictions for the
Employment of a Minor in the District of Columbia
Under the District of Columbia Child Labor Law, minors under 18
years who are working in the District of Columbia must obtain
a work permit before being employed.
Minors under 18 years of age:
Minors who are 16 or 17 years of age:
- May not work more than 8 hours in any 1 day
- May not work more than 6 consecutive days in any 1 week
- May not work more than 48 hours in any 1 week
- May not work before 6:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m. at any time, including weekends
Minors under 16 years of age:
- May not work more than 3 hours on a school day
- May not work more than 18 hours in a school week
- May not work more than 8 hours on a nonschool day
- May not work more than 40 hours in a nonschool week
- May not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. (Note: From June 1 through Labor Day, minors are permitted to work until 9:00 p.m.)
- May not use any type of power equipment, including power lawnmowers

Restrictions for the Employment of a Minor in Virginia
Under the Commonwealth of Virginia Child Labor Law, all minors
under 16 and working in Virginia must obtain
a work permit before being employed.
Minors under 18 years of age:
Minors who are under 16 years of age:
- May not work more than 3 hours on a school day
- May not work more than 18 hours in a school week
- May not work more than 8 hours on a nonschool day
- May not work more than 40 hours in a nonschool week
- May not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. (Note: From June 1 through Labor Day, minors are permitted to work until 9:00 p.m.)
- May not work during school hours unless enrolled in a school work-training program
- Must be granted a 30-minute rest or meal period following 5 hours of continuous work

Restrictions for the Employment of a Minor in Maryland
Under the State of Maryland Child Labor Law, minors under 18 years who are working in Maryland
must obtain a work permit before being employed.
Minors under 18 years of age:
Minors who are 16 or 17 years of age:
- May spend no more than 12 hours in a combination of school hours and work hours on any 1 day
- Must be permitted at least 8 consecutive hours of nonwork, nonschool time in each 24-hour period
- May not be permitted to work more than 5 consecutive hours without a non-working period of at least 30 minutes
Minors who are under 16 years of age:
- May not work more than 3 hours on a school day
- May not work more than 18 hours in a school week
- May not work more than 8 hours on a nonschool day
- May not work more than 40 hours in a nonschool week
- May not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. (Note: From June 1 through Labor Day minors are permitted to work until 9:00 pm)
- May not work more than 5 consecutive hours without a nonworking period of at least 30 minutes
The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation
forbids employing minors under the age of 16 in certain ccupations.
Supervisors can obtain additional information regarding areas of
restricted employment from Issuing Officers in Maryland secondary
schools or from the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation's
Division of Labor and Industry.
