Employment of Minors

The employment of minors is highly regulated by federal and state laws. Supervisors must be aware of the federal and District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland child labor laws to prevent any employment that would violate these laws or is against University policy. The applicable law is the law of the state in which the employee actually works. Note that while local jurisdictions permit employment of minors who are 14 years old, University policy requires that minors must be at least 15 years old to be employed.

The applicable laws differ among states and can be quite confusing. Questions regarding information provided in this section may be directed to the Department of Compensation Administration at (202) 994-9630.
