Types of Involuntary Termination Description
Abandonment of Position An employee who is absent for three consecutive workdays without notifying his or her supervisor of the reason for the absence may have his or her employment terminated for abandonment of position.
Death
Dismissal for Poor Work Performance or Work Habits Employment may be terminated before the end of a probationary period if after a prescribed interim period an employee's poor work performance or work habits show insufficient improvement. In most circumstances, a written warning should precede a probationary period.
Elimination of Position In some circumstances, the elimination of a position or a reduction in the number of hours required for a particular position may be necessary. Such circumstances include the restructuring, reduction, or elimination of units or services. In such situations, the University's policy for the elimination or reduction in effort of regular positions generally applies.
Expiration of Appointment or Lack of Funding The employment of sponsored programs research personnel and temporary personnel may expire on predetermined dates or when funding for continued employment is no longer available.
Failure to Complete Introductory Employment Period or Transfer Probation Period Employment may be terminated during or at the conclusion of the introductory employment period or transfer probation period if an employee has not demonstrated the skills, knowledge, attitudes, work habits, or other qualifications necessary for continued employment. Employment may be terminated before the conclusion of this period if the supervisor and the Employee Relations Division conclude that such action is appropriate.
