Types of Involuntary Termination

Description

Abandonment of Position
|
An employee who is absent for three consecutive workdays without notifying his or her
supervisor of the reason for the absence may have his or her employment terminated for
abandonment of position.

Death
|
|
|
Dismissal for Poor Work Performance or Work Habits
|
Employment may be terminated before the end of a probationary period if after a prescribed
interim period an employee's poor work performance or work habits show insufficient improvement. In
most circumstances, a written warning should precede a probationary period.

Elimination of Position
|
In some circumstances, the elimination of a position or a reduction in the number of hours
required for a particular position may be necessary. Such circumstances include the restructuring,
reduction, or elimination of units or services. In such situations, the University's policy for
the elimination or reduction in effort of regular positions generally applies.

Expiration of Appointment or Lack of Funding
|
The employment of sponsored programs research personnel and temporary personnel may expire on
predetermined dates or when funding for continued employment is no longer available.
|
|
Failure to Complete Introductory Employment Period or Transfer Probation Period
|
Employment may be terminated during or at the conclusion of the introductory employment
period or transfer probation period if an employee has not demonstrated the skills,
knowledge, attitudes, work habits, or other qualifications necessary for continued
employment. Employment may be terminated before the conclusion of this period if the
supervisor and the Employee Relations Division conclude that such action is appropriate.
