Start! Fitness Challenge

Colonial Community is proud to partner with the American Heart Association’s Start! Campaign, a physical activity initiative to fight heart disease and stroke by getting people to move. By participating in this program you can significantly improve your health and receive great tools including:

Compete for prizes against other GW faculty and staff while you exercise your way to a healthier you! You can compete as a team or as an individual, the choice is up to you.

Team Challenge:

Individuals can organize themselves into teams with a maximum of 5 people (teams of 6 or 7 are allowed but may be at a disadvantage). Team members can be any faculty or staff member who currently works at George Washington University and does not necessarily have to be in your department. Each team must select a leader to fill out the form below. Every participant will need to track his or her own exercise using either the on-line system or through weekly paper exercise logs.  Detailed instruction will be e-mailed to you once your team has registered.

Individual Challenge:

We are  also offering an individual challenge.. Individuals will only compete against other individuals in the competition and cannot be part of a team. Please fill out the form below to register.

Fitness Challenge Details:

Program Starts: Monday, January 23, 2011

Program Ends: Monday, March 19, 2011

Goal:

The fitness challenge will be eight weeks long.  To complete in the Team Challenge each team will need to log a minimum of 1.2 million steps (roughly 300,000 steps per individual team member)

Exercises don't have to be just walking and running - all exercises, even weight lifting, can be converted into steps using the online tracker.

To compete in the Individual Challenge each individual must complete a minimum of 300,000 steps (remember, the tracker will convert any activity into steps).

Prizes:

Prizes will be based on the total number of steps taken during the 8 week challenge Note: tracker converts activities to steps; you do not need a pedometer to track steps

Team Prizes:

  • 1st Place Team: Each individual on the team gets a gold medal and their choice of Platinum level prize.

  • 2nd Place Team: Each individual on the team gets a silver medal and their choice of Gold level prize.

  • 3rd Place Team: Each individual on the team gets a bronze medal and their choice of Silver level prize.

Individual prizes:

  • 1st Place individual:  Choice of a Platinum level prize.

  • 2nd Place individual: Choice of a Gold level Prize.

  • 3rd Place individual: Choice of a Silver level prize.

All Challenge Finishers: All other teams or individuals who complete the challenge will receive a Bronze level prize and a certificate of completion.
