This bookcase belonging to I. Edward Kiev was from Bezalel, the famed Art Academy in Israel. It features works that would represent a typical bookshelf in the home of the average erudite German Jew during this era.

Bezalel Bookcase

A selection of those works include, from the left: the two volume Geschichte der judischen Literatur [History of Jewish Literature] (1909) by Gustav Karpeles and the biblical plays, Jaakobs Traum [Jacob's Dream] by Richard Beer-Hoffman; and Jeremias [Jeremiah] by Stefan Zweig. Both of these plays, published in 1918, were adapted into Hebrew and became core productions of the two emerging Hebrew theaters in Moscow and Tel Aviv, respectively. Some other works displayed are Brennendes Geheimnis [The Burning Secret] (1920) also by Stefan Zweig; Fuhrer der Unschlussigen, [Guide to the Perplexed] (1923), a German translation of Moses Maimonides' pivotal work into German by Adolf Weiss; a 1928 two-volume edition of the Talmud Yerusalami [Jersualem Talmud] printed in Berlin; and Ein Diwan von Jehuda Halevi [The Diwan of Jehuda Halevi] (1900), the poetry of Jehuda Halevi with a biographical sketch by Emil Bernard.

The rest of the works in the Bezalel Bookcase are introduced in the passages of their respective authors throughout the on-line exhibit.
