I. Edward Kiev Judaica Collection
The I. Edward Kiev Judaica Collection at the Gelman Library houses over 22,000 books, pamphlets, and periodicals, as well as manuscripts, graphic art, and artifacts. The majority of materials date from the 18th through the 20th century, but there are also works that date back to the 15th centuries.
The collection covers the range of Jewish studies, including:
- biblical exegesis and archeology
- Jewish history
- modern Hebrew literature
These volumes are not only diverse in age and subject areas, but are written in several languages:
- approximately 45% of the works are in English
- approximately 30% of the works are in Hebrew
- approximately 20% of the works are in German
- a modicum in French, Russian, Yiddish, Arabic, Latin, Hungarian, Spanish and Farsi
In 1996, Dr. Ari and Phyllis Kiev donated the personal library of their father and father-in-law Rabbi I. Edward Kiev, chief librarian of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City. Since 1998, the collection has been housed in its own reading room in the Gelman Library’s suite 710.
A description of the Kiev Collection's subject matter and holdings as well as other Judaica collections held in the Special Collections and University Archives is available online.
