The Goodwill Games were an international sports competition created by Ted Turner in reaction to the political troubles surrounding the Olympic Games of the 1980s. The first Games were held in Moscow in 1986, and featured over 3,000 athletes from 79 countries participating in 182 events. Subsequent Games were held in Seattle, Washington, St. Petersburg, Russia, New York, New York, Lake Placid, New York, and Brisbane, Australia. Time Warner Australia purchased the Games in 2001. The final Games were held that same year.

Collection Scope and Content

This collection contains publicity materials, press releases, schedules, calendars, art contest entries, photographs, slides, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other materials related to the 1986 Goodwill Games. The materials date from 1984-86. The collection primarily consists of public relations manuals originally housed in a series of binders. The manuals contain information related to the Goodwill Games, including background information about the Games, its founders, and sponsors; biographical information about participating athletes; schedules, calendars, and timelines of events and activities; and other information used to answer inquiries about the Games. The collection includes the winning entries in a children's art competition to design a poster to promote the Games. There are color slides of the winning entry from each state, along with black and white photographic prints of the winners, the contest entry forms, and related correspondence. There are also a few newspaper clippings containing profiles of the Games. Finally, the collection contains a workbook written for teachers of elementary school children containing lesson plans relating to the 1984 Olympic Games.

This collection is part of the Event Management and Marketing Archives. This archives was established to support the Forum for Sport and Event Management and Marketing of the International Institute of Tourism Studies at The George Washington University.
</scopecontent>
