The Gelman Library serves primarily the GW community, mainly current students, faculty, staff, and alumni. To enter the library, GW patrons must present a current, valid, GWorld card. The Gelman Library is closed to the general public, but access is granted to GW-affiliated universities, schools, and organizations.

Directions and Map

The library is located at 2130 H Street NW; Washington, DC 20052. The building is on the corner of 22nd and H streets.

    For more information on where to park around GW, go to the university's Parking Services website

  • Public Transportation
  • The closest Metro station to GW is the Foggy Bottom stop on the Orange and Blue lines. As you exit the station, turn right and walk one block to the first stop light (H Street). Turn left and walk 1.5 blocks to the Library entrance on your right.

Entrance Policy and Borrowing Privileges

  • Local Users

  • Students and Staff from ARL Institutions
    Students and Faculty whose home libraries are members of the Association of Research Libraries may enter the Gelman Library. To find out if your institution is a member of ARL go to http://www.arl.org/members.html

  • OCLC Reciprocal Borrowing Program
    Faculty from any institution that participates in the OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program may enter the library. Call the Reference Desk at (202) 994-6048 to find out if your institution participates.

  • GW-Sponsored Visiting Scholars and Researchers
    Visiting Scholars and Researchers sponsored by GW faculty or administrators

  • Woodrow Wilson Scholars
    Your name must be on the Temporary Access List of Gelman Library. Call Gelman Library Building Operations at (202) 994-9870, to make sure you are on the list.

  • General Public
    Members of the public may use the U.S. Government Documents collection. You must sign-in at the access desk, and inform access desk staff of your desire to use the U.S. Government Documents collection. After signing-in, you will be directed to the appropriate area of the library. The general public cannot checkout materials from the Gelman collection.
