Getting Started
What do I need to do to start with RefWorks?
To use Refworks, you need to set up a personal account which you can do on the log-in page. It's best to use a username/password combination that is different from your cmail log-on. You can create as many accounts as you would like.
Will I still have access to RefWorks when I graduate?
Like many of the online library resources, RefWorks is only available to current GW students, staff, and faculty. If you would like to continue your access to RefWorks after you leave the University, you will need to purchase an individual subscription.
I already have an individual RefWorks account- how can I transfer my references?
You can easily transfer your references to our group account and save a bundle! Follow the directions found at http://www.gwu.edu/gelman/service/refworks/acct-transfer.pdf.
It's asking me for a group code- what is it?
Click here for the group code. Alternatively, you can access RefWorks form off-campus by going to the ALADIN Research Portal or going to the Gelman RefWorks page.
How do I backup my RefWorks account?
Instructions for backing up and
restoring your RefWorks account are available here: http://www.gwu.edu/gelman/service/refworks/backingup.pdf

How do I get my citations into a different word processing program?
At this time Write-N-Cite is only available on Microsoft Word for Windows or Mac. The easiest way to insert your citations into a word processing document other than Microsoft Word is to use the One Line/Cite View. To do this:
- Log onto Refworks and choose the One line/Cite View View.
- Select the citation that you would like to insert and click the "Cite" link to the right of the reference.
- A new window will pop up that looks like this:
- Copy the text in the window and paste it into your document.
- When you are ready to format your paper, save it and create a bibliography within Refworks.
Can I use Write-N-Cite at home?
Yes! However, you will either need to enter the Group Code each time you use Write-N-Cite or use the instructions below to set-up home access. You only need to follow these instructions for set-up once and must be done after you install Write-N-Cite:

Working with your references
How do I get page numbers in the in-text citations of an APA formatted document?
Since APA doesn't have page numbers in the in text citation by default, you can't use the"Specific Page." Instead, use the "Text After" option (also in the Edit Citation window) to add the page number.
In order to get the correct formatting, type a comma and the space, then add "p. 1," changing the page to the one you would like to cite. Click the Save to Word button to make the change in the unformatted document. After formatting, the in text citation will include the page number.
Can I store documents in my RefWorks account?
Yes! Each RefWorks account comes with 100 megabytes of storage space, so you can save pdf's of articles and other files directly in your account. Just go to the record that you want to add the file to and click on the Browse and select your file.

Each attachment can be no more than 5 megabytes. If you need more than 100 megabytes of storage space, email the Refworks Support Team!
