Recalls, Holds, In Process, and SearchesIf the ALADIN catalog indicates that a book is owned by Gelman, but you don't find it on the shelf, you may be able to use one of the services below to help you obtain the book. RecallsIf you need a book that is charged out to another person, you may place a recall on that book at the Circulation Desk. All requests for recalls must be made in person at the Circulation Desk. Only GW students, faculty, and staff are eligible to place recalls. Books from Gelman, Eckles, and the Virginia Campus libraries are subject to recall after they have been charged out for at least 14 days. When you place a recall, the circulation staff will contact the original borrower and tell them that they have 14 more days to finish using the recalled item(s). In many cases this shortens the original loan period. Items that have been recalled can not be renewed by the original borrower. When the book is returned, you will be notified by e-mail or telephone. You then have ten days to pick up the book at the Circulation Desk. If you have not picked up the book after 10 days, it will be re-shelved or checked out to another person. Note: If you have a book checked out that is recalled by another person, you will be notified by e-mail, postal mail or telephone. If you receive a recall notice, you have 14 days from the time the recall was placed to return the book. Note that this is 14 days from the date on the recall notice, not 14 days from when you open the notice. It's important that students, faculty, and staff who need a particular book are able to obtain it quickly, so recall fines are high. Recall fines are $5 per day, up to a maximum of $25. HoldsIf you need a book that is charged out to another person, you may place a hold on that item at the Circulation Desk. All requests for holds must be made in person at the Circulation Desk. Only GW students, faculty, and staff are eligible to place holds. When you place a hold, you ensure that you will be the next person to check out the book. Placing a hold does not shorten the original loan period for the person to whom the book is checked out. That person, however, will not be allowed to renew the book. When the book is returned, you will be notified by e-mail or telephone. You then have 10 days to pick up the book at the Circulation Desk. If you have not picked up the book after 10 days, it will be re-shelved or checked out to another person. In Process RequestsNew books may be listed in the ALADIN Catalog before they are fully processed and on the shelf. For these books, you will see the following displays in the ALADIN catalog:
If you see these displays and want to obtain the book, fill out an In Process Book Request form at the Circulation Desk. These requests take only 2-3 business days to process, and you will be notified by email when the book is ready to pick up. All in process requests must be made in person at the Circulation Desk. Only GW students, faculty, and staff are eligible for this service. It's possible that a book may appear in the ALADIN catalog before it's actually received in the library. If you see the following display, it means the book in not yet in the library and cannot be requested:
In this case, keep checking the Aladin catalog until the you see the "Location" status change to "GW Patrons May Request Rush Processing at the Circulation Desk". All in process requests must be made in person at the Circulation Desk. Only GW students, faculty, and staff are eligible for this service.
Missing Book SearchesIf the ALADIN catalog indicates "Status: Available" but you cannot find the book on the shelf, fill out a Missing Book Search form at the Circulation Desk. All missing book searches must be made in person at the Circulation Desk. Only GW students, faculty, and staff are eligible for this service. Library staff will search for the book, usually for a period of 6 weeks. If the book is found, you will be notified by email and it will be held for you at the Circulation Desk for 10 days. If the book is not found, you will be notified by email. You will then have the option of desk staff placing a request for you to obtain a copy from another library. Return to Borrow and Renew Books
