Priorities in Assignment of Closed Study Carrels

Closed Study Carrels are spaces within Gelman Library that provide a private environment for conducting independent research and data collection that requires use of library materials. These rooms are available for use by GW Doctoral Candidates writing their dissertations.

Gelman Library has a limited number of study carrels available for student use.


GW Doctoral Candidates writing their dissertations.
  • Time Limit: Two years; may extend one additional year only (if necessary to complete dissertation) upon written confirmation from Dept Chair or Faculty Advisor.

GW Doctoral Candidates preparing for their comprehensive exams.

  • Time Limit: One year

The following groups are ineligible for Closed Study Carrels:

  • GW Masters Students
  • GW Undergraduate Students
  • GW Emeriti Faculty
  • GW Faculty
  • GW Law Students
  • GW Law Faculty
  • GW Medical Students
  • GW Medical Faculty
  • Non-GW Faculty (other than those listed above)
  • Non-GW Students
  • Visiting Scholars
