Quotations
- Bartlett's Familiar Quotations
- The 9th edition of Bartlett's (1901) provides an alphabetical list of authors, a chronological list of primary authors, and a searchable index of quotes. This is an authoritative source for quotations, but keep in mind that it does not contain modern-day quotations. Follow these guidelines when constructing searches:
- Enter a few related words, rather than a single word. The system will find all quotes containing one or more words:
nature conservation organization love marriage children
- When searching for a phrase (two or more words in a row) separate the words with dashes, or surround them with quotes, for example:
give-me-liberty "give me liberty"
- To exclude documents containing a particular word, put a dash in front of that word. To find all documents containing the phrase "old age" but not containing "youth", try one of the following:
old-age -youth "old age" -pizza
- Use an asterisk to match an arbitrary string in the middle or at the end of a word, for example:
cold blood*
- Quotations Page
- One of the better organized quotations sites. Select "Quote Search/Advanced Form" to search several quotations collections by keyword, author, or subject.
- Yahoo!: Quotations
- Provides links to many quotations sites, including daily quotations, quotations on specific topics, by specific authors/personalities, etc.
