Art Exhibit and Reception in Eckles Library
Please join us at Eckles Library on December 9th at 5:30 p.m. for a welcome reception with artist Tom Block. His exhibit, "Prisoners of Conscience: Human Rights Painting Project," is currently on display in Eckles in conjunction with the five Freshman Advising Workshops devoted to Human Rights. The reception will be an informal affair designed to provide a wonderful opportunity to meet the artist and learn more about his works and the project. Pizza and beverages will be provided.

International Film Series and Nordic Film Festival
The Gelman Library System's 2003 Internation Film Series is underway. This year, the series includes a Nordic Film Festival, with films from Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and Finland. The series is sponsored by the Friends of the GW Libraries and is free and open to the public. See the schedule for details.

Interlibrary Loan Books Now in myALADIN
Interlibrary Loan books checked out beginning Monday, November 3, 2003 will be included in patrons' myALADIN accounts, in the list of charged GW items. This will enable patrons to see items they have checked out from GW and WRLC libraries and interlibary loan books all in one list. See details.

Presentation by Prof. Etzioni -- Friday October 17
GW University Professor Amitai Etzioni will give a presentation and sign copies of his new book, My Brother's Keeper, on Friday, October 17 in the 24-hour Reading Room on 1st floor. A reception will follow his talk.

Senior Gift Dedication and Reception -- Friday, October 17
The dedication of the 2003 Senior Class Gift will take place on Friday, October 17 at 3 p.m. in the 24-hour Reading Room on 1st floor. A reception will follow.

Friends of the GW Libraries Open House -- Saturday, October 18
As part of Colonials Weekend 2003, the Friends of the GW Libraries will be offering tours of Gelman Library, the GW campus, and the Foggy Bottom neighborhood on Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The GW Memorabilia Room, Special Collections, the Kiev Collection, and University Archives will be open for you to visit. New Features on ALADIN Homepage
If you haven't been to the ALADIN site yet this semester, you'll find it has many new features to make your research projects more efficient and productive. Combined Search, for example, let's you search multiple databases simultaneously, and the database menu now inludes links to Gelman's Research Guides. Hurrican Isabel Update
Gelman Library is open regular hours starting Saturday, September 20. Power is on in all areas of the building.


September 18, 2003. Update 11:20 a.m.

Hurricane Isabel
Due to the effects of Hurricane Isabel, all classes on all GW campuses are CANCELLED and the University will be CLOSED Thursday, Sept. 18 AND Friday, Sept. 19. Designated personnel must report to work.

Gelman Library will attempt to be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The Circulation Desk and the Access Desk will be the only service points open.

For Library staff, Adverse Weather Condition 3 is in effect for both days.

Research Guides in ALADIN
Gelman's popular series of Research Guides are now listed along databases in the Databases by Subject menu on the ALADIN homepage. Research Guides are produced by Gelman librarians and lead you to the best reference books, databases, and other sources in specific subject areas. Save time and find the best information for your next term paper or research project by using a Research Guide.

Gelman Library Open House, Thursday, September 4
Gelman Library will host its annual Open House to welcome students, faculty, and staff to the start of the academic year. The Open House will run from 4-6 p.m. in the 1st floor lobby. Join us for refreshments, demonstrations of the latest information resources, and lots of free stuff.

Gelman, Eckles, and Virginia Campus Libraries Closed on September 1
Libraries will be closed today for Labor Day, and will reopen on Tuesday, September 2. See the Library Hours page for details.

New home pages for Gelman and Eckles Libraries were launched today. These pages were created with input from GW students and faculty and will make it easier for you to find information on library resources, policies and services. If you have comments or suggestions on the new pages, please let us know.

Web Search Moves to a New Location
Gelman's guide to web search engines, Web Search, has moved to a new location at http://www.gwu.edu/gelman/guides/general/websearch/

New Look and Functionality for ALADIN Databases
Several improvements on the ALADIN homepage go live today. Most noticeable is an expanded "ALADIN Databases" section with these new features:

  • Quick links to popular databases Academic Search Elite and Proquest General Reference.
  • A "Databases by Subject" section that lists the best databases for over 70 different subject areas.
  • "My Databases" where you can build a customized list of databases.

Other new features include "Combined Searching," which allows you to search multiple databases simultaneously and merge your search results into one list.

Printing and Photocopying

Treasures from the Jewish Cultural Renaissance in Germany, 1898-1938
This exhibit features works from the I. Edward Kiev Judaica collection. Prior to World War II, there existed a period of rebirth and rediscovery of Jewish culture and the Hebrew language in Germany. On display are works from this era that The Gelman Library is fortunate to possess thanks to Rabbi I. Edward Kiev's involvement in the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction. New Circulation Policies
The libraries of the Gelman Library System at GW (Gelman, Eckles, and Virginia Campus) along with WRLC Libraries have standardized loan periods, renewals, overdue fines, and other cirulation policies. See Summary of Standardized Circulation Policies for WRLC Libraries for full details.
