Gelman Library Quick Guide
Access and Hours
Your GWorld card is required to enter the library. During the semester, we are generally open 24 hours a day for GW students, faculty, and staff. To be sure about our hours double check Gelman’s site www.gwu.edu/gelman/library/hours
Articles
Use the ALADIN Research Portal to access the 20,000 electronic journals we have and our 300+ subject specific electronic databases to find citations to journal articles.
Print journals are located on the 3rd floor. To find out what journals we have, use the ALADIN Catalog. If Gelman does not have the journal but another Consortium library does, click on ‘Request through Consortium Loan (CLS)’ in the record to request a copy of the article.
If none of the Consortium libraries have the journal, use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to request your article, which is linked from the main Gelman site under Services.
E-Journals
Check to see if we have a journal electronically using the E-Journals link from the main Gelman Library site.
Off-Campus Access
To access the ALADIN Research Portal and E-Journals from off-campus, you will need to log in with your last name and your GWid, then select George Washington University from the drop-down menu.
Books
Use the ALADIN Catalog to search for books.
Gelman Library’s books are shelved on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors and use Library of Congress call numbers. Use your GWorld to check books out at the Circulation Desk on the 1st Floor.
You will find not only Gelman’s books, but also books from all the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC), which includes 8 other universities in the greater DC Metro Area.
You may request books from the WRLC Libraries through the ALADIN Catalog. You can also
go to those libraries in person and check out books using your GWorld card.
Undergraduates Students can borrow books for 28 days. Graduate Students can borrow books for 42 days. However, you can renew the books three
times online via MyALADIN, which is your library account. The link to MyALADIN is located on Gelman’s site under Services.
Research Help
For help while you’re in the library, go to the Reference & Information Desk on the 1st floor for research advice and assistance.

Computing in the Library
The computers on the 1st , 3rd, and 6th floor have Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. To save your documents you must use a USB Drive.
The 24 Hour Computer Lab on the Lower Level requires a G1 account and has a variety of software.
Wireless Internet is available in the library to current GW students, faculty, and staff. Connect to gwireless, open a browser, and follow the directions.
Guest Wireless is available. Please check with the Reference & Information Desk, located at the back the 1st floor, for more information.
Printing and Photocopying
All printing and photocopying requires a GWorld Card or Courtesy Card to print.
Printers are available near each group of computers. It costs $.09 a page. No double-sided printing is available.
The 24 Hour Computer Lab on the Lower Level has color printing for $.85 a page.
Photocopiers are located on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 7th floors.
Study Rooms
Gelman offers a variety of study options, including group study rooms and quiet study rooms. Each room has a sign posted on the door with regulations for laptop use.
