Library Assignment:   Special Collection and University Archives
Primary Location:  The Gelman Library System

SALARY: Appointment at the rank of Librarian I (minimum $47,000).  Salary is dependent upon qualifications. The position is a limited term position to last approximately 12 months.

The Special Collections Research Center (SPRC) of The George Washington University is searching for an experienced archivist to process and describe the records of the National Education Association (NEA), ca. 1857 - ca. 2006. The NEA is the largest organization of educators in the United States of America, with a global reputation of advocating the improvement of education and of the conditions of educators. The collection documents the history and functions of this organization and is approximately 1400 linear feet, including some audio and visual materials.

The incumbent will be responsible for analysis of the collections, and provision of intellectual control, including finding aids in EAD format, and all processing activities according to national standards for treatment of special and archival materials. Incumbent will work closely with NEA and GW staff and will supervise a part-time assistant.

The collection includes NEA publications; official association records; transcripts and videos of NEA meetings and conventions; NEA presidential records; NEA artifacts; photographs; films in various formats and microfiche. 

Basic Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or master’s degree in history (or other relevant subject) with formal coursework or training in archival management, and two years’ experience arranging and describing archival collections or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Additional Selection Criteria: Thorough knowledge of archival processing, description, and access theories and procedures; strong communication, organizational and project management skills.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Knowledge of preservation theories and procedures and supervisory experience are desirable.
