REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN
Library Assignment: Gelman Library System (GLS)
Primary Location: Eckles Library, Mount Vernon Campus
Appointment Rank and Salary: Appointment at the rank of either Librarian I (minimum salary $42,000) or Librarian II (minimum 2 years experience; minimum salary $45,000). Rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.
Position Description: Eckles Library seeks a dynamic, creative librarian to develop new initiatives in reference, instruction and outreach. The position provides reference services and implements emerging technologies for end user services. The position also provides instruction for students in the first year component of the University Writing Program and to academic departments and applies principles of assessment to instruction activities. The librarian also interacts with student groups, faculty, and academic departments to identify needs and to promote, enhance and evaluate services. The librarian serves as a member of library and university committees as needed. The position reports to the Coordinator of Reference Services.
The Eckles Library, a branch of GW’s Gelman Library System (GLS), is a full-service academic facility, serving as a hub for academic experiences on the Mount Vernon campus, a predominantly freshman environment. The campus is home to the flagship Women’s Leadership Program and the Interior Design Program; additional areas of academic strengths are comparative politics, art, interior design, and women's history and contemporary issues. Service, instruction and outreach are central to the mission of the Library. Eckles Library participates in the integrated information literacy program and virtual reference services of the GLS.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Provides reference services, including desk and virtual reference via email and IM; participates in the Reference Services Group
- Provides instruction for students in the first year component of the University Writing Program and additional academic departments as needed, including partnering with faculty to develop course-integrated instruction based on curricular needs; participates in the Education and Instruction Group
- Participates in a vigorous academic outreach program, maintaining existing partnerships with the Writing Center, Women’s Leadership and Interior Design programs and additional academic departments
- Collaborates with the Eckles Outreach Coordinator in programming, marketing, publicity and assessment
- Trains and evaluates student assistants in providing desk and virtual reference services
- Designs and creates end user services and resources, including research and class guides, blogs, wikis, etc. when appropriate; maintains and updates the Eckles blog
- Participates in reference collection development
- Oversees the Eckles Prize for Freshman Research Excellence, an annual award for undergraduates utilizing library resources
- Schedules flexible hours as required to support academic activities and delivery of reference and instruction services
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- ALA accredited MLS
- Experience providing reference services and/or relevant coursework
- Teaching experience and/or coursework in library instruction, information literacy, or education
- Experience using online resources, including bibliographic and full text databases
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:
- Ability to work effectively with coworkers in a collaborative, team-based organization
- Excellent teaching/presentation skills
- Familiarity with the concepts, goals, and teaching methods of information literacy
- Experience developing lesson plans, preparing instructional materials or tutorials, collaborating with faculty on assignment design, and integrating instruction into course management systems
- Experience providing reference service
- Experience with service design, outreach and assessment
- Knowledge of web-based technologies for outreach and services
- Commitment to outreach and user-centered services
- Evidence of understanding of key issues, ideas and trends in reference and instruction
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or other productivity software
