Finding Books

To locate books, use the WRLC Libraries Catalog. Search books using "anthropology" as a Subject term. Once the list of Subject Headings comes up, click on the button for suggested subject terms or strategies to narrow your search. Finding Articles

To access databases with a location of "ALADIN", click on the title of the database. To see a list of databases available through ALADIN, go to the ALADIN Home Page; and under Databases by Title on the right side of the screen, choose from the three alphabetical groupings.

ALADIN databases are available for use only by current GW students, staff, and faculty. If you are using this page from off-campus, you will be prompted to enter the barcode number from the back of your GWorld ID card before you can access the database.

Annual Review of Anthropology
Location: ALADIN
Articles report key research of the year in subfields of archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistics and communicative practices, international anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. Full-text access extends back to 1972.

Anthropology Plus
Location: ALADIN
Brings together into one resource Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index from the United Kingdom's Royal Anthropological Institute. Worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, and edited works in the fields of social, cultural, physical, biological, and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, folklore, material culture, and interdisciplinary studies. Coverage is from the late 19th century to present.

AnthroSource
Location: ALADIN
Developed by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), AnthroSource brings 100 years of anthropological material online to researchers, including current issues for 15 of the AAA's core peer-reviewed publications in the fields of sociocultural, linguistic, and medical anthropology, as well as archaeology. A complete electronic archive of all AAA journals through 2003 is keyword searchable and available as full text. Includes seamless access to archival content housed at JSTOR for key AAA publications including American Anthropologist.

Art Abstracts
Location: ALADIN
Includes articles dealing with ethnographic and archaeological material culture, including costume, ceremonial objects, and the curation and preservation of materials.

GEOBASE
Location: ALADIN
Worldwide literature on physical and human geography, ecology, and development studies.

Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts

Covers all aspects of the study of language, including anthropological and geographical linguistics.

Ethnologue Database

The Ethnologue Database is taken from a print publication Ethnologue: Languages of the world. Contains information on some 6,700 languages spoken in the world, including alternate names, number of speakers, location, dialects, linguistic affiliation, and other sociolinguistic and demographic data. The data can be accessed by country or territory name, language or dialect name and through a language family tree.

National Archaeological Database

A computerized communications network for the archeological and historic preservation community--is an internationally recognized source of information on public archeology. NADB ("Nad-Bee") was established to meet a congressional directive to improve access to information on archeological activities nationwide.

National Anthropological Archives (NAA)

"The National Anthropological Archives collects and preserves historical and contemporary anthropological materials that document the world's cultures and the history of the discipline." The NAA site is an excellent means to accomplish the first stage of anthropological archival research from a remote location. Their online Guide to the Collections of the National Anthropological Archives includes for each entry "a title, biographical data or administrative history, an indication of the type of documents available, and a description of contents (often including lengthy lists of authors, photographers, and correspondents)"as well as assessments of the state of the material and its possible research uses.

The site's online exhibits feature substantive reviews of selected collections in the Archives, including photographs and facsimiles. In addition, NAA links to the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System(SIRIS)and offers a useful discussion of search strategies. The site provides information and costs for ordering photographs and manuscripts from both the NAA and the SIRIS collections.

"The Smithsonian's library collections contain over 1.2 million volumes, including 15,000 journal titles, rare books and manuscripts. SIL collections are particularly strong in natural history, tropical biology, and Chesapeake Bay area ecology; Anthropology; American and African American history and culture; postal, horticulture and garden history; the history of science and technology; aerospace history, astronomy, and planetary sciences; African, American Asian, contemporary, and design and decorative art; conservation science, and museum studies."

All libraries are open to the public. Appointments are recommended. Please contact the library or libraries you are interested in for more information.
