Accessing ALADIN

ALADIN is a shared electronic library system serving the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC). It provides online access to the ALADIN Catalog and a variety of Article and Other Databases. WRLC Consortium members are: American University (AU), The Catholic University of America (CU), Gallaudet University (GA), George Mason University (GM), The George Washington University, Georgetown University, Marymount University (MU), The University of the District of Columbia (DC), and Trinity College.

This guide is arranged in the following sections:

Please rate this guide. See the bottom of this page.

Accessing the ALADIN Catalog

The catalog lets you search for books and other items held by WRLC libraries. There are three ways to access the catalog:

  1. From the Gelman Library homepage: http://www.gwu.edu/gelman
You can search from this page using the ALADIN Catalog Quick Search or click on "more search options" for Basic Search and Guided Keyword Searching
  2. Through the ALADIN Research Portal: http://www.aladin.wrlc.org
Click on the blue tab marked "Catalog" at the top of the screen.
  3. Via direct link: http://catalog.wrlc.org/

Accessing Articles and Other Databases

ALADIN databases are available for use only by current GW students, staff, and faculty. You will be prompted to enter the barcode number from the back of your GWorld ID card (it begins 22882) or your GWid before you can access Gelman Library's online databases from off-campus locations.

From the ALADIN Home page

You will be prompted to login to the proxy server the first time you connect to ALADIN to access a restricted database. You will receive this login prompt once per browser session. Your validation will remain in effect until you exit your web browser. While still logged on, you may move between restricted databases without interruption.

  1. Go to ALADIN: www.aladin.wrlc.org
  2. Enter your last name and your University ID (the barcode from the back of your GWorld card or your GWid).
  3. Choose your institutional affliliation in the dropdown menu. Click Go.
ALADIN Login

This will allow you to access the ALADIN Article Databases. If the login page is returned again, check to make sure that you have entered a valid ID with no punctuation or spaces. If you continue to have problems, call the Reference Desk at (202) 994-6048 to make sure you have access to the off-campus Article databases.

Note: You would not normally need to log in if you are using a GW computer.

From Bookmarks or Links Within the Gelman Home Page

If you access the databases directly via bookmarks or URLs that point directly to the database site and do not go through the ALADIN menu, you will receive an ALADIN login prompt when you click on the link to the database. Follow the instructions to enter your last name and ID number and click the Continue. This will bring up the database you selected.

Accessing Online and Electronic Journals

You can search for e-journal subscriptions for Gelman Library in the ALADIN Catalog. Search by the title of the journal. Entries for e-journals will include a link to the web site where you can retrieve articles.

You may also click on the WRLC e-Journals button on the right side of the main ALADIN page to find out if GW has an online subscription to a particular journal. Search by the title of the journal. You must first be logged on to ALADIN to see use this option.

You must be logged on to the ALADIN home page before you can access any journals. See the instructions above on Accessing Articles and Other Databases.

NOTE: Some online and electronic journals may not be available remotely. Some of Gelman Library's subscriptions to certain online and electronic journals may only be accessed on-campus.

Having Trouble Accessing Databases?

Please note that many offices have firewalls set up which do not support the type of proxy GW uses.

  • Using AOL?
America Online's browser does not support the use of GW's proxy server, but Netscape/Firefox or Internet Explorer may be used in conjunction with AOL.
  • You could log in before, but now you are having trouble.
If you have successfully used the proxy server in the past, and it suddenly stops working, the proxy server may be down. Please report the problem to the Gelman Library Reference Desk at 202-994-6048 or send an e-mail to refdesk@gwu.edu.
  • Barcode not working?
The barcode found on the back of your GWorld card (it starts 22882) can be used to access online library resources. If you have trouble with logging on, contact the circulation desk at 202-994-6840 or by e-mail at librcir@gwu.edu
  • Can't remember your GWid or having trouble logging in with it?
You can look up your GWid online at gwid.gwu.edu. If you experience difficulties using your GWid, contact the ISS Help Desk at (202) 994-5530 (option 1 for students and option 2 for faculty and staff members).
  • Do you have a question or need more help?
You can contact a librarian by phone, IM, e-mail, or in-person. Visit Ask a Librarian at http://www.gwu.edu/gelman/ref/askus.cfm for contact information and hours.
