Please rate this guide. See the bottom of this page.
-
PsycINFO is a primary resource for research in psychology and related disciplines.
The database includes citations for articles from over 1,300 journals, conference papers,
books, book chapters and dissertations. Coverage extends back to 1887. New resources are added weekly.
-
To get to PsycINFO:
- Go to the ALADIN
Research Portal (http://aladin.wrlc.org).
- (If you are off campus, here is where you will be asked to log in. See
NOTE, below.)
- In middle column, click on Databases by Title.
- On the next page, click on the letter 'P' in the horizontal alphabet.
- In the full list of the Ps, locate PsycINFO, and click on the
database name to open it.
*NOTE: If you are off campus, log on to ALADIN to access the ALADIN databases. Put your last name in the
first box. Put your GWid number in the ID box, beginning with the letter "G". For the
Institution, select George Washington from the dropdown menu.
-
Enter a search word or a phrase in the white box.
You may also limit your search to English by checking the box next to 'English language'.
Limit to a publication year range by clicking the drop down menu and selecting date limits, For example, 2000-2008.
Click the red 'Search' button to get your results.

-
- Scroll down to view your results. Click on the blue 'Complete
Reference' link to see information about the resource, including the abstract
(summary). The type of document will appear in the brackets. Examples are
[Peer Reviewed Journal], [Chapter], or [Edited Book].
To see the abstract (the summary) of the document, click on the blue 'Complete Reference' button. Click
on the blue FindIT button to go directly to the full text of the
article, if it is available in any of the other ALADIN databases.

-
Use the 'Map Term to Subject Heading' feature to verify that the search term that
you are using is a 'official' subject heading in the PsycINFO database. To do this, put your term in the
search box and put a check mark in the box adjacent to 'Map Term to Subject Heading'.
Then press the red 'Search' button.

This will
return a list of official PsycINFO subject headings. Put a check mark next to the
most appropriate term from the list and press the 'Continue' button. Please note that
you can select multiple terms as well. If you do not find a term among the suggested subject headings that matches
your topic, you may also search your term 'as a Keyword'. That option is at the bottom of the list of
suggested terms.

The Secret of the Asterisk If you re-run the search with an asterisk (*) before the subject heading, you will
get only those documents that have that term as a main subject. Notice below that when
the search is re-run with an asterisk added, the results are somewhat diminished and more
finely focused.
-
To save your article citations, place a checkmark next to each one. Scroll to the
bottom of the screen. There are a number of different format options in the Results Manager menu on the left hand side of the screen. Select those that apply.

To print the citations, click on 'Print Preview'. The citations will
display on the computer screen. From here, you can use the browser to print,
by clicking on File->Print.
To e-mail the citations, click on 'Email', type your email address, and
click the 'Send Email' button.
To save the citations, click on 'Save'. You will be asked to choose the
computer platform you are working on. Click the Continue button.
A dialogue box will appear. Please indicate the path to save to.
