Quick Guide: Academic Search Premier
Please rate this guide. See the bottom of this page.
-
- Academic Search Premier provides the full text of journal articles from nearly 1,560 academic, social
sciences, humanities, general science, education and multi-cultural journals.
In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts (summaries)
for articles in 2,730 additional journals. Nearly 1,800 journals are scholarly peer reviewed. Coverage runs
back to 1984 for many of the journals.
-
- Academic Search Premier is restricted to use by GW students, staff, and
faculty. It can be accessed from any computer with web access, both on and
off campus.
- To get to Academic Search Premier, go to the ALADIN
Research Portal (http://aladin.wrlc.org). (If you are off campus, here is where you will be asked to log in. See
NOTE, below.) Under the large heading 'Databases', and under the sub-heading
'Start here for articles', is a direct link to Academic Search Premier. Click on that link to go directly
to the database.
Alternatively, you may find Academic Search Premier by going:
- To the ALADIN
Research Portal (http://aladin.wrlc.org).
- (If you are off campus, here is where you will be asked to log in. See
NOTE, below.)
- In middle column, click on Databases by Title.
- On the next page, click on the letter 'A' in the horizontal alphabet.
- In the full list of the As, locate Academic Search Premier, and
click on the database name to open it.
NOTE: If you are logging in from a off-campus computer, you will
have to log on to ALADIN to be allowed access to the ALADIN databases. In
the first box, type in your last name. In the Patron ID box, type in your
GWID. For the Institution, select George Washington from the dropdown menu.
Press Continue and follow the directions above to find
the database.
-
Enter search word(s) or a phrase into the keyword box(es) —e.g. global warming and rain*.
- Wildcard Placeholder: Notice the asterisk (*) at the end of the word rain. That asterisk will
return all possible endings to the word rain, such as rainforest, raining, rains, rainfall and so forth. This is handy if you're
not sure whether to use the singular or plural of a word.
Scholarly articles: If necessary, limit to scholarly journals by putting a check mark in that box.
Finally, click on the grey Search button to execute your search.

-
Here is an example of an article citation from the results list:
To read the abstract, click the blue underlined title of the article.
The HTML Full Text icon indicates the full text of the article is
available. Click to open the full text of the article.
The PDF Full Text icon indicates the full text is available in pdf format.
Click on the icon to open the full text of the article.
If the only icon in the citation is the FindIt Check for Availability icon , then click on that to follow
the link to the full text of the article, if it
exists in another database.
If it is not available elsewhere online, then use our Finding the
Full Text of Articles Guide (http://www.gwu.edu/gelman/guides/general/fulltext.html) to find other ways to access the full
text on paper.
-
- When you leave the drop-down menu selection on 'Default Fields', you are searching for your terms as keywords in all
those parts of the article's record. Use that
kind of search when you are beginning your research. Don't use Subject Terms from the drop-down menu on the search page until you
verify, by looking at some citations, that your
term is indeed used as a subject in this database.
Browse the other options available in the drop-down menus adjacent to the search boxes. Use the appropriate ones to limit your search, such
as Company Entity, Geographic Terms, or People. You can use Journal Name if you want to limit your search to one particular journal.

-
To print, e-mail, or download individual articles, use the toolbar located at the top of the page.

After clicking the appropriate link, follow the directions provided on the screen to save results.
To accumulate a list of articles to be printed, e-mailed, or downloaded all together, click on the Add button
on the far right of the citation. That will add that article to your folder and, at the end of your session,
you may printed, e-mailed, or download everything in the folder.
