Locate Books and Videos
Use the
ALADIN Catalog on ALADIN, which
includes holdings for Gelman Library and the other memeber of the Washington Research
Library Consortium, and the database WorldCat which includes holdings of thousands
of libraries. Some of the subject headings that may be uselful to search under
are listed below.
Associations, institutions, etc.
Charities
Foundations
Non-governmental organizations
Nonprofit corporations
Nonprofit organizations
Voluntarism
Under these subject headings there may be useful subheadings (e.g. voluntarism
management)
Locate Articles in Periodicals
Use the following indexes to find periodical articles. To access those sources
with a location of ALADIN, click on the title of the database. If accessing
these databases directly from ALADIN, choose the the appropriate alphabetical
grouping under Databases by Title.
ALADIN databases are available for use only by current GW students, staff,
and faculty. If you are using this page from off-campus, you will be prompted
to enter your last name and the barcode number from the back of your GWorld
ID cared and select your institution before you can access the database.

Location: ALADIN
This indexes and provides abstracts to articles in about 1,000 economics,
management (including nonprofit management), and information technology periodicals.
The full text is also available for many of the articles. A thesaurus of subject
headings is available by clicking on Browse Topics and then on Thesaurus.
Some good subject headings to use are associations, charitable foundations,
charities, foundations, member services, nongovernmental organizations, nonprofit
hospitals, nonprofit organizations, red cross organizations, religious organizations,
and tax exempt organizations. It is possible to limit a search to scholarly
articles by typing 9130 and changing the box to the right to classification
code in the advanced search format.

Location: ALADIN
This indexes and provides abstracts and much full text for business magazines and trade journals. It is international in scope.

Location: ALADIN
Similar to ABI Inform (above). Some good subject headings to use are: nonprofit
organizations, non-governmental organizations, charities, trusts & trustees,
and associations, institutions, etc.
- Factiva. Daily
Location: ALADIN
This provides the full text of numerous newspapers, magazines, newswires,
trade journals, and transcripts of electronic media.
- Lexis/Nexis.
Daily.
Location: ALADIN
This provides full text of articles of a great many newspapers and business and general periodicals. It is particularly good for news items.
- Military
and Government Collection
Location: ALADIN
Includes coverage of nonprofit subjects.
- Sage Public Administration Abstracts. 1974 -
Location: REF JA 1 .S27
This covers public administration and other related journals. It has subject and author indices. Good subject headings to use are nonprofit organizations and voluntary agencies.

A directory to the D.C. area, including associations, interest groups, labor
unions, think tanks, etc.
- Encyclopedia of Associations. Annual.
Location: READY REF HS 17 .G32
This provides information on all sorts of associations. Volume one part three is an index by keyword to parts one and two.
- Guidestar
Location: http://www.guidestar.org
Covers more than 620,000 nonprofit organizations providing financial information
(from IRS 990 forms) and other information. Clicking on Advanced Search gives
you more flexibility in searching.
- Washington. Annual. 1996-
Location: READY REF F 192.5 .W3 (Next latest at the Virginia Campus Library.
Earlier in stacks. Special Collections has 1966, 1968, 1971, 1975, 1979, 1984-1993,
1995-)
This is a, "directory of the area's major institutions and people who run them," including associations, foundations, cultural institutions, and the like.
