This is a good first place to look for U.S. statistical information. A subject index leads to tables with footnotes indicating the sources of the tables. Published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

Provides analysis of geographical areas demographically and also as regards lifestyle interests (e.g. bowling foreign travel). It also provides information on lifestyle segments (e.g. what sorts of people like to do needlework and what else they like to do) and on"consumer segment groups" (e.g. single males, 45-64 years old).


Choices III: New Simmons Study of Media and Markets. Semi-Annual.
Location: COMPUTER NEAR THE REFERENCE DESK
Provides demographic, geographic, and psychographic data on consumer buying behavior, largely as it relates to brands and media. This has a mix of popular, practitioner-oriented, and scholarly articles. A thesaurus of subject headings is available online.


Business and Industry. Daily. 1994-

Covers "leading trade magazines, newsletters, the general business press and international business dailies" from different countries and in a number of languages. For all articles there are substantive abstracts in English and the full text is available as well for most of the English language articles.

Market Guide. Annual. 1984-.

For each newspaper market (usually a city or town) gives information on population, industries, retail outlets, etc. Also provides rankings and tables of data. Covers Canada as well as the U.S.


Rand McNally Commercial Atlas and Marketing Guide.
Location: REF G 1036. R2 (KEPT ON ATLAS CASE). LATEST EDITION ONLY RETAINED. NEXT LATEST AT VIRGINIA CAMPUS LIBRARY
Gives business information not usually found in atlases, as well as demographic data.

Indexes to Statistics


American Statistics Index. Monthly. 1974-.
Location: REF Z 7554 .U5 A46
Indexes and abstracts of U.S. government statistical publications. Annual cumulations. Indexing is by subject and name, category (age, race, geographic area, etc.), and title. The library owns a number of the publications indexed in microfiche (1974-2004) on the third floor and on paper. Some are also available electronically. For assistance in locating them, ask at the reference desk.

Statistical Reference Index.

Similar to American Statistics Index for non-federal government statistical publications. Indexes many trade association publications for specific industries as well as state and local sources. Cumulated annually.


Index to International Statistics. Monthly. 1983-.
Location: REF HA 17 .I535.
Indexes and abstracts statistical publications of major international intergovernmental organizations (e.g. Organization of American States, United Nations) that are in the English language. Indexing is by titles, by publication numbers, by issuing sources, by categories (age, commodity, country, individual company of enterprise, industry, sex) in which data is broken down in a publication, and by subjects, names and geographic areas. Almost all of the publications indexed are on microfiche on the third floor (1983-). Some are also on paper and available electronically. The indexes and abstracts themselves are cumulated quarterly and annually.

The Ad*Access Project, funded by the Duke Endowment "Library 2000" Fund, presents images and database information for over 7,000 advertisements printed in the U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines between 1911 and 1955. Ad*Access concentrates on five main subject areas: Radio, Television, Transportation, Beauty and Hygiene, and World War II, providing a coherent view of a number of major campaigns and companies through images preserved in one particular advertising collection available at Duke University. The advertisements are from the J. Walter Thompson Company, Competitive Advertisements Collection of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History in Duke University's Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library.

This covers histories of advertisers, brands, markets, and agencies; biographies; and theory, methods, and practices of advertising.
