Industry Information: United States

This bibliography includes the major information sources at Gelman Library that provide information about U.S. industries. For abritional sources one can look in ALADIN catalog for books (including directories and yearbooks) under the name of the industry, e.g., Food Industry and Trade; Insurance, Life. Another search strategy that may prove useful is looking up market survey on the local catalogue as a phrase in Guided Search. Other relevant bibliographies one may wish to consult are Company Information Sources, Business Indexes and Abstracts, and Business Ratios. This guide is arranged in the following sections:

This is a compilation of information from periodicals and brokerage house reports on market share of companies, products, brands, and services. The entries are arranged by Standard Industrial Classification code. There are also four indexes: place name; source; company; and product, services, and issues.

This provides the full text of stock brokerage reports on industries in abrition to individual companies

Analyses

Standard and Poor's Industry Surveys. Quarterly, July, 1977-.
Location: READY REF HC 106.6 .S74 (LATEST EDITION IN REFERENCE; EARLIER IN STACKS)
This consists of basic analyses and current analyses for a number of industries. It is narrative in approach with a number of charts and graphs as well. This is a good source to use in order to gain a view of the nature, prospects, outlook, and major companies of an industry.

WEFA Industrial Monitor. Annual. 1997-2001
Location: HC 101 .W44
Quite similar to the preceding two items. Covers over 130 industries.

U.S. Industry & Trade Outlook. Annual, 1970 - 1994, 1998-2000.
Location: HC 106.5 .A17
Quite similar to Standard and Poor Industry Survey; this is a publication of the Department of Commerce. From 1970-1994 the title was U.S. Industrial Outlook

Encyclopedia of American Industries.
Location: Gale Virtual Reference Library (ALADIN); also REF HC 102.E53 2005
This two-volume work provides overviews of industries as defined by four-digit Standard Industrial Classification code numbers. There is also an older edition on the fourth floor at HC 102 .E53 1994.

Investext.
Location: ALADIN
This provides the full text of stock brokerage reports on industries and (in far greater numbers) on individual companies.

Value Line Investment Survey.
Location: REFERENCE DESK AND READY REF HG 4501 .V26 (EARLIER ISSUES ON MICROFICHE).
There are three parts to this survey: Summary and Index, Selection and Opinion, and Ratings and Reports. It analyzes about 1500 separate stocks and also trends in about 75 industry groups. The statistics and text are updated on a rotating basis, thus giving revised quarterly information on each industry and company included.

This very useful reference work provides for each subject it covers (and many of those subject are industries) citations to sources of information such as periodicals, directories, and statistical compilations.

Census Material

The U.S. Bureau of the Census publishes a wealth of statistical information covering most industries. Listed below are some of the important publications contained in Gelman Library.

County Business Patterns. Annual. 1964-
Location: http://www.census.gov/epcd/cbp/view/cbpview.html. Also in Print: HC 101 .A184 (for 1964 - 1997).
Arranges four digit SIC code data by county. The data for each industry include "number of employees, taxable payrolls, and number of establishments by employment size class." There are volumes for the separate states and a summary volume for the U.S. as a whole.

Encyclopedia of American Business History and Biography.
Location: ALADIN Catalog.
This multi-volume series is located in different places depending upon which industry a given volume covers. To see the records for the various volumes in the ALADIN catalog, just search for this work by its title.

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) supersedes the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system (see below). There is a keyword search and tables to convert from SIC to NAICS and vice-versa. A complete overview of the NAICS scheme is also available.

Browse by category or search by keyword to obtain the 4-digit SIC code for a product or service. This site uses the 1987 version of the SIC manual, which is superseded by NAICS (see above).
