Mergent Manuals (Formerly Moody's Manuals)
This series of manuals provides directorial, business, and financial information on publicly-traded companies. Included are officers, brief histories of companies, excerpts of financial statements, and descriptions of stock and debt issues (including ratings of the latter). This provides "financial snapshots" and the more extensive "financial snapshots plus profiles". Company screening reports allow one to create a list of companies meeting certain selected criteria. One can also retrieve comparison reports that compare one company with its industry.

This provides business and financial information on more than 10,000 corporations whose shares are traded in the U.S.


Research Insight. Annual.
Location: REF CD STATIONS
This provides detailed financial data (but no text) on more than 7,500 publicly-held companies whose stock is traded in the United States. A handout and manuals are available at the terminal and reference desk respectively.


Worldscope. Weekly.

"[A]n international database containing financial profiles, fundamental analysis, and stock performance data for over 8,500 companies in 32 countries and 27 industries." NAARS Annual Reports

Provides financial statements. There are two databases, one covering 1972-1984 and the other 1984-1995.


SEC File
Location: The fiche is kept behind the Periodicals Desk on the third floor, but the index to the fiche (which it is necessary to use to get the code number for the desired report) is both behind the Periodicals Desk and in Ready Reference.
This is a microfiche collection of the 10K reports of all corporations (U.S. or foreign) registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission back to 1983, and other documents (e.g., proxies, annual reports) for selected companies.


SEC Filings & Reports.

Both of these databases are accessible through ALADIN. Contains 10-K, 10-Q, annual reports, and proxies from July 1987 and 20-F reports from 1989.

Stock Brokerage Reports

This provides the full text of stock brokerage reports on individual companies and on industries.


Corporate and Industry Research Reports: 1985-1991.

This is a microfiche collection which consists of company and industry research reports done under the auspices of a number of investment firms. Also included are "special reports" which consider economic trends and/or forecasts, and periodicals published by the aforementioned investment firms. The paper index to this collection includes company and industry indices for the research reports. There are separate, alphabetically arranged title lists for the special reports and periodicals, but there is no subject arrangement to them. Instead, both are arranged under the name of the investment firm which publishes them. (The research reports are also arranged in this way in abrition to by industry and company). Descriptions of each periodical and special report are provided, and the tables of contents of most of the periodicals are available on the microfiche entitled "Periodical Contents." The research and special reports and the periodicals are investment oriented, though the information they contain can be put to other uses. This is an important source of information.

The following items are directories which give certain basic information (e.g. abrress lines of business, officers) and usually also give some limited business or financial information (e.g. sales, employees).


Ward's Business Directory. Annual. 1991 -.

This three volume work lists U.S. companies, public and private, with sales of at least $500,000. It arranges them in three ways: alphabetically, alphabetically within each zip code within each state, and by three digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code. Within each SIC code number, the companies are arranged by sales. There are also some other lists (e.g. "Top 1,000 Publicly Held Companies Ranked by Sales Volume").

This provides some basic data about the companies included. If you pick a company, it will also list the other Fortune 500 companies in that industry.

It has SIC code, alphabetic, and geographic indexes as well as ranking firms by revenue within SIC codes.

The over 17,000 companies covered are arranged by 51 product classifications, but there is an alphabetical index. The uniqueness of this directory is in its providing the advertising budget and the company and types of media used. There is also a very helpful trade name list indicating company and type of product for each trade name.


Directory of U.S. Corporations. (Earlier title: Fortune Double 500 Directory of U.S. Corporations) Annual. 1977-1986, 1988-1990, 1992.

Covers the Fortune 500 Largest Industrial and the Fortune Service 500 (i.e., 100 largest diversified service companies, 100 largest commercial banking companies, 100 largest diversified financial companies, 50 largest life insurance companies, 50 largest retailing companies, 50 largest transportation companies, 50 largest utilities). Includes ten-year earnings per share growth rate among the other financial data provided.
