Banks and Banking

This bibliography lists directories, sources of U.S. banking data and analysis (international banking data sources are contained in the bibliography International Financial Statistics), an index to statistics that includes U.S. banking statistics, dictionaries, encyclopedias, financial tables, and a specialized banking periodical index. Other relevant bibliographies are Company Information, Industry Information, Business Indexes and Abstracts, U.S. Economic Data. This guide is arranged in the following sections:

Location: REFERENCE HG 4961.M65 (EARLIER EDITIONS IN STACKS.)
Provides historical and financial information on leading U.S. Banks. The center blue pages contain listings of the largest banks (not limited to U.S. banks) and other statistical data on the industry. Updates are at News Reports (http://www.mergent.com/publish/news_reports.asp) and are compiled on a monthly basis in Mergent Corporate News Reports Monthly REF HG 4965 .M66.

This provides historical and financial information on U.S. companies including banks. It generally includes the information contained in the Mergent Bank and Finance Manual (see above).

This "provides annual statistical information...beginning in 1934." The data is for Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)-insured banks and savings institutions and can be aggregated for each state, territory, and possession.

This includes, "both structure and financial data on [FDIC] insured banks," from 1934 to 1994.

This web site of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, "is a quarterly publication that provides detailed aggregate financial information as well as key structural data (number of institutions and branches) for all FDIC-insured institutions." The paper and microfiche are annual publications.

Allows creation of detailed financial reports for "any combination of single FDIC-insured institutions or bank holding companies, custom peer groups of FDIC-insured institutions or bank holding companies, or standard peer groups-insured institutions."

This primary source for U.S. statistics includes a good deal on banking. A subject index leads to tables of data with footnotes indicating the sources of data.

The first place to look for current U.S. monetary and banking statistics.


American Statistics Index. Monthly. 1974-
Location: REFERENCE Z 7554.U5A46
Indexes and abstracts of U.S. government statistical publications. Annual cumulations. Indexing is by subject and name, category (age, race, geographic area, etc.), and title. There is quite a bit on banking. The library owns a number of the publications indexed on microfiche (1984-2004) and in paper. Some can be accessed online. For assistance, ask at the reference desk.
