Finding Articles

To access databases with a location of "ALADIN", click on the title of the database. To see a list of databases available through ALADIN, go to the ALADIN Home Page. Under "Databases by Title" on the right side of the screen, choose from the three alphabetical groupings. ALADIN databases are available for use only by current GW students, staff, and faculty. If you are using this page from off-campus, you will be prompted to enter the barcode number from the back of your GWorld ID card before you can access the database.

Provides indexing, abstracting, and some full text of articles and from 298 journals related to the study of religion.


America: History and Life
Location: ALADIN
Indexes and abstracts articles in scholarly journals and books on the history of the United States and Canada (1964 to present). Some articles are linked full-text.

ATLA Religion Database
Location: ALADIN
Database of the American Theological Library Association indexes articles in journals and books from 1949 - present covering biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social issues.

Index Islamicus
Location: ALADIN
The Index Islamicus database indexes literature on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim worldfrom 1906 to present. (with links to full-text where available)

Index to Jewish Periodicals

Location: ALADIN

This database provides a comprehensive guide to English-language articles, book reviews, and feature stories in more than 160 journals devoted to Jewish affairs. Titles include Contemporary Jewry, Holy Land Studies, Jewish Culture & History, Journal of Palestine Studies, Studies in American Jewish Literature, and many more.

Philosopher's Index
Location: ALADIN
Provides indexing and abstracting of the philosophical literature from 1940–present. Although the main focus is philosophy, subject coverage also includes areas relevant to the study of religion.

The Bible.

Includes both Old and New Testaments, basic texts for Judaism and Christianity.

Book of Mormon.

Sacred text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints.

Dhammapada.
Location: REF BQ260.B83
A sacred text included in the Buddhist canon.

Qur'an.
Location: REF BP109.
Also called the Koran, sacred text to followers of Muhammad.

Science and Health with a Key to the Scriptures.
Location: BX6941 .S4
Written by Mary Baker Eddy, this text contains the teachings of the Church of Christ, Scientist .

Rig-Veda.
Location: Ref BL1112 .54 .E5
Sacred text of the Hindu faith.

Citation Styles for Sacred Texts


MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.
Location: READY REF LB2369 .G53. Latest in reference, earlier editions in the stacks.
According to the MLA Handbook, internal documentation of sacred texts should list version, chapter abbreviation, and verse. (For example: New International Version, Rom. 12:2) Sacred texts are included under Works Cited.

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
Location: READY REF BF76.7 .P82 1994
According to the APA manual, internal documentation of sacred texts should list chapter, verse, and version. (For example: Romans 12:2, New International Version) It is not necessary to include sacred texts in the reference list at the end of the paper.

SBL Handbook of Style for ancient Near Eastern, Biblical, and Early Christian Studies.
Location: REF PN147 .S26 1999

SBL (Society of Biblical Literature) standards require that internal documentation of sacred texts list the abbreviated name of the chapter, verse, and abreviated version.  (For example:  Rom 12:2 NIV).  Sacred texts are not included in the bibliography.
Style guide specific to research in classical and religious studies.
