Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy. Cambridge University Press, 1999.
Location: REF B 41 .C35 1999

Entries in this text are brief, excellent introductions.  The coverage of topics is comprehensive. 

 

Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Macmillian, 2006.
Location: Gale Virtual Reference Library (ALADIN); also available in print REF B 51 .E53 2006
The print version of this resource is ten volumes providing a comprehensive range of topics.  Articles are well written and well documented.


The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. University of Tennessee at Martin.
Location: http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/
The entries for major theories and philosophers are very detailed and each has a bibliography. The interface is simple and navigation is easy.


Books on or by Individual Philosophers

To find books written by a particular philosopher, search in the ALADIN Catalog using the philosopher's name as author. To find books about a particular philosopher, use the Advanced Search option. Enter the philosopher's name in the search box and search in the 'Subject' field.

Philosopher's Index. 1940 to current

The Philosopher's Index provides indexing and abstracts from books and journals of philosophy and related fields. It covers the areas of ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, and metaphysic logic as well as material on the philosophy of law, religion, science, history, education, and language.


JSTOR. Dates vary.

Full text access to eighteen important philosophy journals. Coverage extends from the nineteenth century to 1998.


Project MUSE. Dates vary.

Full text access to fourteen philosophy journals. Coverage extends from 1995 to current.


Academic Search Premier. Dates vary.

This general database includes 199 journals focused on philosophy and many articles are full text. In order to limit your search to scholarly journals, be sure to check the box next to 'Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.


ProQuest Research Library Plus. Dates vary.

Excellent source with authoritative articles.  The table of contents includes articles that are not yet available as well as those that are already posted.

Excellent resource. Comprehensive subject listings, including philosophical fields (such as Aesthetics, Ethics, Metaphysics), modern philosophical movements (such as Existentialism and Marxism), and individual philosophers and their works. Direct links to listservs, academic programs, international conferences, and over thirty online journals.

 

Special Topics:  Bioethics


Encyclopedia of Bioethics. New York, Macmillan, 2004.

This resource covers a wealth of topics on the ethics of health professions, animal research, population control and the environment, the set helps researchers to consider the impact of new scientific knowledge and its potential to harm or benefit present and future generations.


Encyclopedia of Ethical, Legal, and Policy Issues in Biotechnology New York, Wiley, 2000.

This electronic book provides articles on a range of ethical issues including treatment of animals, eugenics, and cloning.  Additional information on legal issues in specific countries is also included.
