catalog of U.S. motion pictures from 1893 to the present. These volumes
provide reliable information, which is thoroughly cross-indexed, about
the cast, credits, plot, and subject of each film. The AFI Catalog of
Feature Films 1951-1960 is scheduled for publication in late 2004.
New Biographical Dictionary of Film

Provides basic, if rather idiosyncratic, biographical information
for many screen figures, both from the U.S. and abroad.
Contemporary Theatre, Film, and Television

These volumes provide basic biographical (and sometimes bibliographical)
information on theater, film, and television personalities. Check the
cumulative index in the back of the most recent volume to find a specific

These two volumes cover the work of more than 350 individuals of historical

scene. Each entry includes biographical detail, the subject's work and

International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers

Each entry provides basic information, bibliographic references, and

Motion Picture Guide

Alphabetical listing of about 50,000 motion pictures produced from
1927 to 1984. Some foreign-language films are covered and there is a
separate volume for the Silent Era. For each entry, cast and credit
information brief synopsis and a critical rating are provided. Included
in the two index volumes are alternate titles, series lists, awards
and a list of roughly 150,000 performers and others involved in filmmaking.
New York Times Encyclopedia of Film

Over 5000 facsimile articles reprinted from the New York Times from
1896 through 1979, chronologically arranged. Note: This work focuses
on the many aspects of filmmaking over a broad period of time, including
business, technology and ethics. Film reviews are not
included.
- For reviews of older films published contemporaneously with the film,
(especially those made before the 1980’s), you will need to consult
print sources, with the exception of the New York Times and the Washington
Post.
- The New York Times and the Washington Post have historical databases
– see Full Text Section below.
- Most journals and magazines published before 1983 are now in storage,
so be sure to allow enough time for requesting these – two to
three business days. Ask at the Reference Desk for help on obtaining
items through the WRLC Consortium.
To access databases with a location of "ALADIN", click on the
title of the database. To see a list of databases available through ALADIN,
go to the ALADIN Home Page. Under "Databases by Title" on the
right side of the screen, choose from the three alphabetical groupings.
ALADIN databases are available for use only by current GW students, staff,
and faculty. If you are using this page from off-campus, you will be prompted
to enter the barcode number from the back of your GWorld ID card before
you can access the database.
Indexes and bibliographies provide citations and often abstracts as well.
Some of the online resources listed below contain full text also. Once
you have a citation, search for the full text using the information in
the section below entitled “Finding Full Text Film Reviews and Criticism”.

Film Index: A Bibliography (c.1900 - 1935)

Compiled by the Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration
in New York City, this covers of scholarly and popular writing in books
and periodicals on the early years of filmmaking up to 1935. Vol. 1:

Film: A Reference Guide

Written in 1980 in the form of a bibliographic essay, this is intended
as an introductory guide for doing research in the field of motion pictures.

the world, indexed by film title, author, actor/director/etc., as well
as by a wide variety of subject headings. This is one of the most comprehensive
annual periodical indexes for motion pictures.
Film Review Index (1882-1985)

Useful guide to locating non-scholarly reviews of some 8,000 feature
films.
Film Study: An Analytical Bibliography (c. 1890s
to 1990s)

This voluminous bibliography discusses the most important books and
articles on a wide range of topics relating to film. May also be searched
by film title.
Guide to Critical Reviews

Comprehensive guide to finding reviews of feature films in popular
periodicals. Arranged alphabetically by the film's title. Scholarly
journals are not covered.
Guide to the Performing Arts (1957 - 1968)

This is an annual index to scholarly and specialist periodicals, encompassing
not only motion pictures, but many other areas of the performing arts.
Film reviews may be found under the headings of "Moving Picture Plays",
"Moving" and "Motion". Individuals involved in filmmaking are indexed
under last name.

Scholarly database focusing on the history of the world, excluding
North America. Provides mostly abstracts but also contains links to
some full-text articles.
International Index to Film Periodicals (1973 - present)

Annual index covering fewer periodicals than Film Literature Index,
but including some foreign titles that are not in FLI. Indexes scholarly
and specialist journals, and divided into three sections as follows:
General Subjects, Individual Films and Biography. Many entries are annotated.
There is no cumulative index, so research on any film older than a year
must include all volumes published since the year of the film's release.
International
Index to the Performing Arts (1998 - present)
Location: ALADIN
Indexes more than 200 scholarly and popular performing arts periodicals,
plus a variety of documents such as conference papers, obituaries and
interviews. Most records in the current coverage contain an abstract,
and some records include full text. Some retrospective citations go
back as far as 1864.
Macmillan Film Bibliography

Extremely useful annotated bibliography arranged alphabetically by
title. Vol. 2 provides a detailed subject index, as well as two other
indexes for authors and for scripts.

Film Arts Foundation

National Film Preservation

The NFPB was established by the National Film Preservation Act of
1996 to ensure the survival, conservation and increased public availability
of America's film heritage, and to this end, one if its functions is
to advise on the annual selection of films to the National Film Registry.
Based at the Library of Congress, the Board is associated with the National
Film Preservation Foundation, whose primary mission is to save at-risk
films such as newsreels, silent films, experimental works, and significant
amateur footage.

and directors...and to the national and international exhibition of
new, independent dramatic and documentary films," the Sundance
Institute was established by actor Robert Redford in 1981. The Institute's
