This is a selective list of sources available for locating literary criticism. Many other reference works for criticism exist, but this guide emphasizes standard sources and those that are particularly convenient for students. This guide is arranged in the following sections:

General Online Sources


MLA International Bibliography
Location: ALADIN
Covers journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language Association. Coverage is international and subjects include literature, language and linguistics, folklore, literary theory & criticism, dramatic arts, as well as the historical aspects of printing and publishing. Listings on rhetoric and composition and the history, theory and practice of teaching language and literature are also included.


Literature Online (LION)
Location: ALADIN
Literature Online is a virtual library containing over 350,000 literary texts together with full-text journals, author biographies and other critical and reference resources. Since its launch in 1996, it has become established as the first port of call both for advanced researchers, looking for accurate online versions of authoritative print texts, and for students who require trustworthy critical sources on set texts and authors.


Early English Books Online (EEBO)
Location: ALADIN
Based on Pollard & Redgrave's Short Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700), plus revised editions and supplements, EEBO contains over 100,000 books published in England between 1475 and 1700. Subjects covered include literature, history, philosophy, linguistics, theology, music, fine arts, education, math, and science--in many languages other than English. Texts continue to be added to the online version as they are scanned from the microfilm.


Gale Literature Resource
Location: ALADIN (Series also available in print in the Reference Stacks)
"Contemporary Authors provides complete biographical and bibliographical information on more than 120,000 U.S. and international authors. Contemporary Literary Criticism--Select collects more than 35,000 critical essays on contemporary authors, with biographical, critical, principal works, and further study information. Dictionary of Literary Biography provides nearly 10,000 biographical and critical essays on the lives, works, and careers of influential literary figures from all eras and genres." Databases are cross-searchable.


JSTOR
Location: ALADIN
Provides full-text back issues of core journals in language and literature--from the first issue but with the most recent three to five years not available. The 46 titles in the Language & Literature Collection span the literary cultures of many different countries, and contain articles in many languages.


Periodicals Archive Online
Location: ALADIN
Periodicals Archive Online (PCI) is an electronic index to thousands of historical (not current) periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, going back to Volume 1 for most titles (in some cases, over 200 years). Full-text articles are available for several hundred titles.


Project Muse
Location: ALADIN
Project MUSE covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and many others. All journals are peer-reviewed; contains full-text.


World Shakespeare Bibliography
Location: ALADIN
Citations to books, articles, book reviews, dissertations, theatrical productions, reviews of productions, audiovisual materials, electronic media, and other scholarly and popular materials related to Shakespeare. Includes international and non-English-language materials.


Arts and Humanities Citation Index
Location: ALADIN (Available on Web of Science and FirstSearch)
Covers scholarly journal literature in the arts and humanities from 1978 to the present. Full indexing of 1,144 leading arts and humanities journals, and of selected relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.


Black Studies Center
Location: ALADIN
A multi-faceted resource that includes: The Chiciago Defender, 1909-1975, an influential historical African American newspaper; International Index to Black Periodicals from 1902 onward with some linked full-text; Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, topical overviews by leading Black Studies scholars; and full-text dissertations on themes related to Black Studies.

Modern Languages and Literatures


ARTFL Project.
Location: ALADIN
Access to databases from the University of Chicago containing the full-text of a broad range of significant books, texts, bibliographies and other works supporting the study of French language and literature.


Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI).
Location: ALADIN
HAPI is a multi-subject index to periodical literature on Latin America and on Hispanics in the United States.


Literature and Culture of Francophone Africa and the Diaspora.
Location: ALADIN
A bilingual site that compiles web resources on Francophone Africa and Diasporic arts, literature, and culture, featuring less widely available periodicals and research.


Gallica: Images et Textes du XIXe Siècle Francophone.
Location: ALADIN
Full-text access to over 100,000 books from the French National Library as well as nineteenth century periodicals.


Biblioteca virtual Miguel de Cervantes.
Location: ALADIN
Full-text access to over books in Spanish and Latin American literature and culture. Includes classic as well as contemporary text, with some digitized manuscripts, images, and scholarship, both written and via videotaped lectures.

Voice of the Shuttle.

Database that serves "content dynamically on the Web." The site models the way the humanities are organized for research and teaching. Humanities mega-cite that contains hyperlinks to the full-text of books and articles by and about World Authors; particularly strong in British and American literature.


Contemporary Postcolonial and Postimperial Literature in English

Provides commentary on authorial settings, themes, characterization, use of imagery and symbols, and narrative structure.  Bibliographies included. Geographical areas covered include: Africa, Australia, India, Caribbean, New Zealand, and United Kingdom. 


Labyrinth: Medieval Database at Georgetown University

Provides access to medieval texts in French, Iberian, Italian, Latin, Mibrle English, and Old English.  Includes hyperlinks to monographic and journal studies. Subjects covered include: Archaeology, Arts and Architecture, Medieval History, Latin, Manuscripts, Paleography, Music, Philosophy and Theology, Social History, Religious History, and Sciences. A model of cross-disciplinary scholarship within a specific literary period.

Provides links to major Shakespearean and Elizabethan sites. Includes discussion of Shakespeare's works, life and times, theatre, criticism, the Renaissance, sources, educational materials, and "best sites."


Victorian Web Sites

Provides hyperlinks to Victorian sites dealing with literature, religion, art, architecture, music, feminism, and numerous other subjects.  Full-text links also included.


Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia

Contains the full-texts of thousands of works in English, French, German, Latin, Japanese, Chinese, and Cyrillic.  Reproduces the covers, title pages, and illustrations of first editions.


Gender Inn:  the Women’s and Gender Studies Database on the Internet.

"The database consists of bibliographic records pertaining to feminist literary criticism and gender studies focussing on British and American literature. In abrition, great emphasis is placed upon the inclusion of general resources and introductory texts in feminst theory." Feminist literature on pedagogy, sociology, history and psychology also included.
