Dictionary of Art Online.

The Grove Dictionary of Art Online provides Web access to the entire text
of The Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with ongoing abritions of new material
and updates to the text, plus extensive image links and all the search advantages
possible with an online reference source.

This thirty-four volume set is the standard and most comprehensive art encyclopedia
in English. Pay special attention to the bibliographies that accompany most
articles. These can lead you to valuable abritional resources.
Encyclopedia of World Art. New York, McGraw-Hill, 1959-1983.

Comprehensive encyclopedia of the art and architecture of all peoples and
periods. Use the Index Volume to find the item that you are interested in.
Articles have detailed illustrations and extensive bibliographies and each
volume has an large section of plates.

WorldCat lists millions of books and the libraries that own them nationwide.
Materials from all time periods are included.
For books about a particular artist, do a Subject search in the ALADIN Catalog, using the person's name; e.g. Vermeer, Johannes. For a complete list of biographies of individuals in art, do a Subject search in the ALADIN Catalog using the search phrase 'artists biography'.

This is an index to doctoral dissertations accepted at accredited U.S. institutions
since 1861. On the Advanced Search page you may combine search terms. For
example, in an Advanced Search, the search phrase 'subject(art) AND india'
will return all those dissertations that use the subject index term 'art'
and that have the word 'india' in either the title or the abstract. For assistance
in getting a copy of a dissertation that you find using this index, ask at

a short biography and a short bibliography of books on the artist.

material on that artist.

An excellent resource for American art. The Archives of American Art are also
located next door in the same building.
National Gallery of Art.

The Art Resource Library
is open by appointment only. Telephone first. Check the web site for telephone
numbers and other details. In addition, visit the National Gallery's web
site for copious information on the works in the collection. Information
for each work of art includes a full screen image, a bibliography, conservation
notes, detail images, exhibition history, the inscription, and the provenance.
